Highlights

  • Target species: Giant trevally (GT), yellowfin and skipjack tuna, sailfish, black marlin (seasonal), barracuda, mackerel, groupers and snappers.

  • Techniques: Trolling, popper casting, fly fishing (select operators), jigging, bottom fishing.

  • Scenery: Fishing over dramatic coral drop-offs, blue-water pelagic grounds and near pristine uninhabited islets.

  • Operators: Local charters from Havelock focus on Havelock’s rich reef edges and open water; Port Blair offers access to deeper offshore grounds and longer-range trips.

  • Combine: Many trips combine fishing with snorkeling, island visits or sunset cruises if time permits.

Itinerary

  1. Transfer to jetty and boarding

Arrive 30–45 minutes before departure. Briefing by captain on route, target species and safety. Carry permits/ID as required.

  2. Transit to fishing grounds

Short hops for inshore reefs (15–60 minutes) or longer transit for offshore pelagics (1–3 hours). Expect calmer conditions early in the day.

  3. Trolling, casting or jigging as per plan

Crew will set up rods, baits and tackle. Rotate anglers, follow crew instructions for fighting and landing fish. Photography windows arranged by crew.

  4. Rest, light meal, and optional snorkeling

Most full-day charters include refreshments; some stop at a sheltered bay for a swim or quick reef snorkel.

  5. Head back to harbour and de-boarding

Weigh and photograph notable catches. Crew handles cleaning/filleting if keeping fish (check local rules).

Safety Requirements

  • Wear a life jacket — operators provide them and use them during rougher conditions.

  • Bring seasickness medication if prone to motion sickness; offshore transits can be choppy.

  • Follow crew instructions for rod handling and when a fish is being landed to avoid injuries.

  • Respect marine protected areas — fishing is prohibited inside designated national park zones (e.g., certain parts of Rani Jhansi Marine National Park); confirm legal fishing zones with operator.

  • Check weather forecasts; trips may be canceled for safety during rough seas or monsoon periods.

  • Carry ID and permits if required by authorities for certain islands or species.

Tips

  • Book in advance during peak season (Nov–Apr) — limited boats and high demand, especially on Havelock.

  • Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, polarized sunglasses and a light long-sleeve shirt for sun protection.

  • Wear non-slip shoes or boat-friendly sandals; avoid flip-flops that can slip off.

  • If you plan to keep fish, confirm weight/size limits and whether the crew will fillet and pack your catch; bring coolers if not provided.

  • Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro and a dry bag for valuables.

  • Consider travel/medical insurance that covers boat activities.

  • Ask operators about tackle options; many include standard tackle but specialized requirements (heavy-duty rods for marlin or GT) may be extra.

  • Respect local customs and marine conservation advice — practice catch-and-release for trophy saltwater species when advised.
