Itinerary
Reach the nearest abra station (Al Ghubaiba, Baniyas or near Al Seef/Al Fahidi).
Look for wooden boats with a small row/engine and a local boatman. Stations are signposted and busy during peak hours.
Pay the small fare to the boatman or attendant for public abras.
Carry small change (AED 1 coin). For private hires, agree price and route before boarding.
Step into the low-lying abra and sit on the simple bench seats.
Watch your step — there’s a small gap and a low freeboard. Staff usually help during boarding.
Short, scenic crossing across Dubai Creek.
Enjoy views of wooden dhows, waterfront warehouses and the mixed skyline of old and new Dubai.
Arrive in Deira or Bur Dubai and head to nearby attractions (Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Al Fahidi, creekside walkways).
This is a great spot to wander markets, taste local food and photograph the creek life.
Take the abra back, or hire a private abra for a longer sunset or dhow-style cruise.
Private hires can include longer loops up/down the creek and may include refreshments.
Safety Requirements
Mind your step when boarding and disembarking — low boarding and small gaps.
Supervise children and keep personal belongings secure (watch the waterline).
Not ideal for those with severe mobility limitations unless assistance is available.
Use sun protection (hat, sunscreen) during daytime crossings; limited shade on public abras.
Follow crew instructions and avoid standing while the boat is moving.
Tips
Carry small change (AED 1 coin) for public abras — they are primarily cash-based.
For the best photos, shoot from the bow or from the creekside just before boarding; sunset provides dramatic light.
Combine the crossing with visits to the Gold Souk, Spice Souk and Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood for a half-day itinerary.
Public abras are almost always cheaper and run frequently; only hire private abras if you want a guided or sunset cruise experience.
Be mindful of local customs — dress modestly when exploring souks and public areas.
Check operating times during Ramadan or public holidays, as schedules and services may be altered.
If you want a quieter experience, go early in the morning on weekdays.
