Chandratal Lake camping and stargazing

Chandratal ("Moon Lake") is a high-altitude alpine lake in Lahaul–Spiti, Himachal Pradesh. Camping on the grassy shores of Chandratal at an elevation of ~4,300 m (14,100 ft) offers surreal reflections, wide open skies and some of the darkest night skies in the Indian Himalaya — ideal for stargazing and astrophotography. This activity combines a short trek/drive to the lake, rustic camping, evening bonfire (where permitted) and guided stargazing sessions.

Location

Chandratal Lake (Chandra Tal), Lahaul–Spiti (nearest bases: Batal, Kunzum, Gramayur; major hubs: Manali or Kaza), India

Duration

Typically 1–2 nights at the lake (total trip commonly 3–5 days from Manali or 2–3 days from Kaza depending on itinerary).

Best Time to Visit

June to September (roads open after winter; July–August for water and meadows; September for clearer nights and fewer crowds). Avoid winter — roads are closed and conditions are hazardous.

Pricing

Approx. INR 1,500–4,500 per person per night for basic tents and shared facilities. Private/glamping options and guided astrophotography workshops range from INR 5,000–12,000 per person. Prices vary by season, group size and inclusions (meals, transport, guide, sleeping bag).

Coordinates

Lat: 32.66, Lng: 77.52

Highlights

  • Pristine moon-shaped lake set against stark Himalayan ridgelines

  • Dark-sky stargazing with visible Milky Way, constellations and shooting stars

  • High-altitude meadows and tundra that bloom in summer

  • Reflections of surrounding peaks at sunrise and sunset

  • Opportunity for astrophotography and nightscape workshops

  • Sense of remoteness and minimal light pollution

Itinerary

  1. Reach Manali or Kaza and overnight; final gear check and acclimatization.

Start early next day. If coming from Manali, plan for slow ascent and acclimatization at key stops like Rohtang / Gramphu.

  2. Drive to Batal/Kunzum Pass area and proceed toward Chandratal (4x4 or high-clearance vehicle required beyond Batal).

Roads are rough and unpaved; allow extra time. Carry spare fuel, puncture kit and a local driver if unfamiliar with terrain.

  3. Set up camp by the lake, short walk/explore, hot meal, get briefed on stargazing session.

Keep noise and light minimal to preserve the experience. Use red-light torches at night.

  4. Guided stargazing: identify constellations, Milky Way viewing, optional astrophotography session.

Clear nights offer excellent visibility; temperatures drop sharply after sunset — heavy insulation required.

  5. Sunrise by the lake, short hike around the rim, break camp and depart toward your next destination.

Plan buffer time for road delays; continue acclimatization if moving to higher passes.

Safety Requirements

  • Acclimatize gradually — Chandratal is high altitude (~4,300 m); know symptoms of AMS (headache, nausea, dizziness) and descend immediately if severe.

  • Carry a warm sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C and layered clothing; nights are very cold even in summer.

  • Use windproof, waterproof tents and secure them properly; weather can change rapidly.

  • Travel in a vehicle suitable for rough mountain terrain; carry spare tyre, tools, extra fuel and a first-aid kit.

  • Inform local authorities/park officials or your camp operator about your itinerary; check for any permits or restrictions before travel.

  • Avoid open fires close to tents and vegetation; follow local rules about campfires and waste disposal.

  • Mobile network is intermittent; carry emergency communication devices (satphone/PLB) if available and a paper map.

Tips

  • Acclimatize in Manali or Keylong/Kaza before pushing to Chandratal — don’t rush in a single day from low altitude.

  • Pack high-energy snacks, water purification tablets, a thermos and plenty of warm fluids.

  • Bring spare batteries and power banks — cold drains battery life fast; store batteries close to your body when not in use.

  • Use a red-light torch for night use to preserve night vision during stargazing.

  • Hire experienced local guides/camps who know the lake, weather patterns and safe camp sites.

  • Carry cash (INR) as ATMs are unavailable; camps and local vendors may not accept cards.

  • Practice Leave No Trace: carry out all non-biodegradable waste, avoid soap in the lake and respect local grazing areas.

  • Check vehicle permits/seasonal road openings (Kunzum/Gramphu passes) and current weather/road reports before departure.

  • If you plan astrophotography, bring a sturdy tripod, wide-angle fast lens (f/2.8 or faster), and learn basic long-exposure settings beforehand.
