Hampta Pass trek

Hampta Pass is a classic high-altitude trek in the Kullu-Manali region that links the lush Kullu Valley with the stark, arid landscapes of Lahaul and Spiti. The route offers dramatic contrasts — dense pine and rhododendron forests, rolling meadows, glacial streams and a saddle-like pass at around 4,270 m (14,000 ft). It's popular with beginner-to-intermediate trekkers and is often done as a 3–4 day trek starting from Manali.

Location

Hampta Pass (approaches via Jobra / Balu Ka Ghera / Chika; descent towards Chatru/Chhatru in Lahaul), Manali (nearest major town), India

Duration

Typically 3–4 days (many operators run a 4-day itinerary). Can be extended to 5–6 days with acclimatization or a Chandra Tal extension.

Best Time to Visit

June to September (July–August offers the fullest greenery; early June and late September possible but expect residual snow or early snowfall).

Pricing

Approx. INR 3,500–8,000 per person for organized group treks (3–4 days). Price depends on group size, inclusion of permits/transport/meals/tents/guide/porter. Private or premium packages and extensions (e.g., to Chandra Tal) cost more.

Highlights

  • Dramatic landscape change from verdant Kullu Valley to the barren, moon-like Lahaul-Spiti terrain.

  • Crossing a high alpine pass at ~4,270 m with panoramic views of surrounding peaks and glaciers.

  • Alpine meadows (bustling with wildflowers in late spring/early summer) and river valleys.

  • Camping under clear night skies — excellent stargazing.

  • Opportunity to extend the trip to scenic spots like Chandra Tal (seasonal).

Itinerary

  1. Arrive in Manali; meet the trek operator and complete gear/permitting checks.

Use this day to acclimatize, check equipment and buy any last-minute essentials in Manali.

  2. Drive Manali → Jobra (30–40 min), Trek Jobra → Balu Ka Ghera (3–4 hours).

Easy-moderate start; gradual ascent through forests into meadows. Camp at Balu Ka Ghera (~2,900–3,000 m).

  3. Trek Balu Ka Ghera → Chika/Shea Goru (4–6 hours).

Trail climbs through rocky meadows and moraine; good views of surrounding peaks. Camp near Chika (~3,600 m).

  4. Cross Hampta Pass (~4,270 m) and descend to Chatru/Siagoru (5–7 hours).

Early start recommended. Pass day is the longest and most exposed — stunning vistas from the saddle and a noticeable landscape change on the Lahaul side. Camp at Chatru (~3,600–3,700 m) or drive out depending on itinerary.

  5. Drive/trek Chatru → Manali (or drive back via Gramphu / Marhi).

Return to Manali; trip concludes. Some itineraries include an optional excursion to Chandra Tal (adds 1–2 days).

Safety Requirements

  • Acclimatize before ascending — spend a day in Manali or at lower altitudes if coming from low elevation.

  • Watch for symptoms of acute mountain sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness); descend if symptoms worsen.

  • Strong, broken-in trekking boots, warm layered clothing, waterproof shell, sleeping bag rated to at least -5 to -10°C.

  • Trekking poles, first-aid kit, personal medications and water purification (tablets or filter).

  • Travel with an experienced guide or licensed operator; register with local authorities or campsite/resort where required.

  • Check local weather and road conditions — Lahaul side can be affected by sudden snow or landslides outside peak season.

  • Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking (check insurer’s altitude limits).

Tips

  • Pack in layers: base, insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell. Temperatures vary widely.

  • Bring a good sleeping bag (comfort to -5°C or lower) and a warm liner.

  • Use trekking poles to reduce knee strain on steep descents.

  • Carry quick-energy snacks, electrolyte powder and at least 2–3 litres capacity for water (with purification).

  • Start the pass day early (before sunrise) to avoid afternoon weather changes and crowds.

  • Hire a local, licensed guide — they know route conditions, river crossings and safe campsites.

  • Carry photocopies of ID and some cash; remote areas may not accept cards and have limited network.

  • Respect local customs and practice Leave No Trace — pack out all non-biodegradable waste.

  • If you plan to extend to Chandra Tal or travel deeper into Spiti, check permits and road availability in advance.
