Itinerary

  1. Begin the trek from Mall Road or the Jakhoo lower parking area. Follow signposted paths or stone steps through small shops and forested stretches.

If you prefer less walking, take a local taxi to the lower Jakhoo Parking or seasonal ropeway/pony where available.

  2. Climb stone steps and dirt trails through deodar/pine until you reach the temple complex near the summit.

Pace yourself on the steeper sections; frequent short breaks help. Carry water.

  3. Explore the Jakhoo Temple, offer prayers if desired, and walk to view the towering Hanuman statue and the valley panoramas.

Be cautious around monkeys—they can be bold. Keep valuables secured and avoid feeding them.

  4. Enjoy 360° views of Shimla, the Ridge, Christ Church and surrounding hills; take photos and rest.

Best light for photos is early morning or late afternoon.

  5. Return the same way to Mall Road or take a rented pony/taxi down if available.

Descending may be quicker but watch your footing on stone steps; slippery when wet or icy.

Safety Requirements

  • Wear sturdy, closed footwear with good grip

  • Carry water, snacks and a small first-aid kit

  • Don't feed or provoke monkeys; keep cameras, phones and food secured

  • Avoid the trek in heavy rain or blizzard conditions; paths can become slippery

  • Be cautious near edges and viewpoints—no railings at some points

  • If you have mobility issues or heart conditions, consider taking a taxi or pony instead of walking

  • Carry warm layers during winter and rain protection in monsoon

Tips

  • Start early to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures

  • Carry at least 1 litre of water per person for the short trek

  • Keep small change and cash for temple donations, ponies, guides and local purchases

  • Use local guides if you want cultural context and safer navigation

  • Dress modestly and remove shoes when entering the temple premises as required

  • Avoid feeding monkeys — it's dangerous and illegal in some places

  • Check seasonal services (ropeway/pony) in advance: they may be closed in winters or for maintenance

  • Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat during summer; carry warm clothing for morning/evening even in shoulder seasons
