Proper trekking shoes/boots, layered clothing, rainproof jacket and warm sleeping bag.
Carry sufficient water (or a purification method) and high-energy snacks; keep hydrated.
Check weather and avoid trekking during heavy rain/landslide warnings or deep snowfall.
Do not trek alone if inexperienced; hire an accredited local guide/porter if unsure.
First-aid kit, blister care and personal medications; consider basic altitude awareness (mild altitude ~2,900–3,200 m).
Follow local rules: restricted fire use, no littering, respect private/tribal land and religious sites.
Tips
Start early from Kasol/Barshaini to avoid afternoon clouds and to secure a good campsite on weekends.
Pack light but include warm layers, thermal base, waterproofs, sun protection, headlamp and power bank.
Carry cash; connectivity is patchy and most campsite operators accept cash only.
Prefer eco-friendly gear and biodegradable toiletries; carry out all non-biodegradable waste.
Respect local customs (Kheerganga has a small Shiva shrine and hot springs — dress modestly when using them).
Book guides or camping packages in advance during peak season and long weekends.
Acclimatize if coming from low altitude; if you feel unwell, descend immediately.
Consider adding a night in Kasol before/after for rest, local cafes and culture.
