Beas Kund,Himachal
Beas Kund is the high-altitude glacial lake regarded as the primary source of the Beas River. It is important both naturally — as a glacier-fed alpine catchment surrounded by high Himalayan peaks and fragile ecosystems — and culturally: local lore links the site with the sage Ved Vyasa, for whom the river is named. The area is also part of the larger Kullu-Manali landscape, which has long-standing traditions of hill pastoralism and mountain pilgrimage.
Places to visit

- Alpine meadows (bugyals) surrounding the lake
- Panoramic views of nearby peaks: Friendship Peak, Hanuman Tibba, Deo Tibba
- Trekking routes from Solang, Dhundi and Manali
- Seasonal wildflower displays and Himalayan birdlife
Unique Aspects
- A classic glacier-fed tarn at high altitude (approx. 3,600–3,700 m)
- Wide expanses of snowfields and small glaciers in late spring/early summer
- High-altitude camping and clear night skies excellent for stargazing
- Relatively accessible as a high-altitude trek — popular with beginners/intermediate trekkers
Things to do
- Day trekking or overnight trekking from Solang/Manali
- Camping beside the lake (seasonal) and alpine photography
- Glacier walks and short exploratory climbs (with proper gear/guides)
- Birdwatching and spotting high-altitude flora
- Base for mountaineering expeditions to nearby peaks (e.g., Friendship Peak)
Best Time to Visit
June to September for the main trekking season (stable trails, melting snow). Late May is possible but can have snow; avoid deep winter (Nov–Apr) unless experienced in snow trekking.
Weather Conditions
Alpine climate: daytime in summer typically 5°C to 15°C, nights often close to or below freezing. Weather changes quickly — expect sun, wind, rain or snow in the same day at higher elevations.
Accessibility
Nearest airport: Kullu–Manali (Bhuntar) (~45–60 km from Manali by road). Nearest major railheads: Chandigarh or Pathankot (longer road transfers). Road access to Manali/Solang; the trek usually starts from Solang / Dhundi / Jobra near Manali. The standard approach is a 6–10 km uphill trek (depending on start point) with 4–7 hours for fit trekkers. No special permit is normally required for day treks; check with local authorities or forest department for overnight camping or fishing permits.
Recommended Duration
1–2 days for an overnight camping itinerary (Manali → Solang → Beas Kund → return). A fit trekker can do a long day trek from Solang, but an overnight stay is recommended to acclimatize and enjoy the area.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Layered clothing (base layer, insulating mid-layer, windproof/waterproof shell), sturdy trekking boots, warm hat and gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen, trekking poles, sleeping bag rated to -10°C for camping, microspikes/crampons if snow is present. Carry a basic first-aid/altitude-sickness kit.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Food options are limited on the trail — eat and stock supplies in Manali/Solang (Maggi, dal, rice, local stews). Try local trout dishes and Himachali sweets in Manali. Good souvenirs: Kullu shawls, woolen caps, handcrafts, dried fruits, local apples.
