Best Time to Visit
Late May to early October is the recommended window, with July–September offering the best accessibility and milder weather. Winters (Nov–Apr) are inaccessible due to heavy snow and road closures.
Weather Conditions
Cold, alpine climate. Daytime temperatures in summer can range from 5°C to 18°C, while nights often drop below freezing. Weather can change rapidly; expect strong sunlight, high UV, and sudden winds.
Accessibility
Nearest major access points: Manali (approx. 125–140 km via Rohtang and Kunzum La in summer) and Kaza in Spiti valley. The common approach is from Manali over Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La (seasonal, usually open May–Oct). Roads are rough and suitable for SUVs or motorcycles. Nearest railway and airport: Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge railway is not practical; the nearest broad connectivity is Bhuntar (Kullu–Manali Airport, 150–170 km) and major railheads at Chandigarh/Pathankot or Shimla with long road journeys onward. Acclimatize due to high altitude; some stretches have no mobile network and limited facilities.
Recommended Duration
1–2 days at the lake if camping (including arrival and acclimatization time). A typical trip from Manali to Chandratal and back is 2–3 days including travel time; include extra days for acclimatization and weather delays.
