Rohtang Pass,Himachal
Rohtang Pass (approx. 3,978–3,980 m / ~13,050 ft) is a high-mountain pass on the eastern end of the Pir Panjal Range that historically connected the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti valleys. It is important as a traditional trade and travel route and today is a major scenic gateway for tourism, offering dramatic Himalayan landscapes, snowfields, glaciers and alpine meadows. The pass is also ecologically significant as a fragile high‑altitude environment sensitive to traffic and climate change.
Places to visit
- Rohtang Pass summit — panoramic views and year-round snow patches (seasonal)
- Snow activities — sledding, snow play and basic skiing (seasonal)
- Scenic drive from Manali — hairpin bends, valleys and rivers
- Solang Valley and Gulaba — nearby adventure and leisure spots
- Lahaul Valley vistas — visible from the pass; approach to remote highland landscapes
- Atal Tunnel (Rohtang Tunnel) — modern strategic tunnel providing year‑round access to Lahaul (nearby, changes travel options)
Unique Aspects

Best Time to Visit
May to October (late spring, summer and early autumn) — pass is most accessible and roads are usually open; heavy snow and closures are common in winter months.
Weather Conditions
Alpine mountain weather: cold, windy and changeable. Temperatures near the pass can be at or below freezing even in summer nights. Sudden snow or rainfall and strong UV radiation at altitude are possible.
Accessibility
Nearest airport: Kullu–Manali (Bhuntar) (approx. 50–70 km by road to Manali, then ~50 km to Rohtang depending on route). Nearest major railway: Chandigarh / Pathankot / Joginder Nagar (longer road transfer required). Rohtang is accessed via a mountainous motorable road from Manali; road conditions vary and the route can be closed in heavy snow. The Atal Tunnel provides year‑round vehicular access to Lahaul and reduces dependence on the Rohtang route for some destinations.
Recommended Duration
A full-day trip from Manali is common for visiting Rohtang; to explore surrounding valleys and acclimatize, plan 1–2 days (or longer if including Lahaul/Spiti).
Clothing & Gear Tips
