Chek Jawa Wetlands,Singapore

Chek Jawa is one of Singapore's most important intertidal ecosystems located on the southeastern tip of Pulau Ubin. It contains six distinct habitats—rocky shore, sandy beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves and coastal forest—supporting rich biodiversity including molluscs, crabs, starfishes, sea cucumbers, horseshoe crabs, mudskippers and many shore and migratory birds. In 2001 a high-profile community and scientific campaign successfully halted reclamation plans, making Chek Jawa a celebrated example of community-driven conservation in Singapore.

Best Time to Visit

Visit at low tide for the best experience — check local tide tables before planning. Weather-wise, Singapore is tropical year-round; cooler, drier months (November to February) are pleasant and coincide with some migratory bird visits, but low tides occur throughout the year.

Weather Conditions

Tropical and humid year-round with frequent short showers. Expect hot sun and sudden rain; dawn and late afternoon are cooler.

Entry Fees & Permits

Access to Chek Jawa is free. Pulau Ubin is reached by bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal (ferry fares are modest and paid per boat; confirm fare at the jetty). The boardwalk and trails are primarily daylight attractions—visit during daylight hours for safety and wildlife viewing.

Accessibility

To reach Chek Jawa: take a bumboat from Changi Point Ferry Terminal to Pulau Ubin (about 10–20 minutes). From the island jetty, Chek Jawa is a cycle ride or a 20–30 minute walk. Facilities are basic; parts of the boardwalk and paths are uneven and not fully wheelchair-accessible. Nearest major transport hubs: Changi/Changi Airport region and bus services to Changi Point; plan onward connections by taxi or local bus to the ferry terminal.

Recommended Duration

Plan for 2–4 hours at Chek Jawa alone (to catch low tide and explore). A full Pulau Ubin day trip is commonly 4–6 hours.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy closed shoes for walking on mud and boardwalks, sunhat, sunscreen (reef-safe), insect repellent, rain jacket, plenty of water, binoculars and a camera. Bring a small towel and hand sanitizer.

Local Food & Souvenirs

There are limited eateries on Pulau Ubin near the jetty—expect simple seafood stalls and kopitiam-style fare; bring cash. There are no shops at Chek Jawa itself. Support conservation by taking photos and respecting the environment rather than collecting souvenirs; consider joining volunteer or donation programs if you wish to contribute.
