Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary,Goa

Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary is a biologically rich protected area in Goa, forming part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. It protects evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, riverine ecosystems (including the headwaters of the Mhadei/Mandovi River), and a wide range of flora and fauna — many of them endemic to the Western Ghats. The sanctuary acts as an important wildlife corridor linking forested tracts across Goa and neighbouring states, contributing to regional ecological connectivity and watershed protection.

Places to visit

  • Mhadei (Mandovi) River headwaters and riverine habitats
  • Tambdi Surla Shiva Temple (historic 12th-century temple within the forest)
  • Chorla Ghat region and scenic viewpoints
  • Waterfalls and seasonal cascades (best seen post-monsoon)
  • Rich birdlife and endemic amphibians/plant species

Unique Aspects

  • Part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot with evergreen/semi-evergreen forests
  • Diverse wildlife including large mammals (gaur, leopard, sloth bear), arboreal and ground birds, reptiles and amphibians
  • High plant diversity with many orchids, medicinal plants and dense canopy cover
  • Important watershed protecting the source of Goa's major rivers

Things to do

  • Guided forest treks and nature walks (permit required from Goa Forest Department)
  • Birdwatching — excellent for spotting Western Ghats endemics and migratory species
  • Wildlife photography and natural-history observation
  • Short hikes to waterfalls, viewpoints and Tambdi Surla Temple
  • Village visits and experiencing local tribal culture around Sattari/Valpoi (respect local customs)

Best Time to Visit

October to March (post-monsoon and winter): forests are lush, trails accessible, and bird activity is high. Monsoon (June–September) offers dramatic greenery and waterfalls but many trails may be slippery and some areas inaccessible.

Weather Conditions

Tropical monsoon climate: heavy rains in June–September, warm and humid in pre-monsoon months, and pleasantly cool during winter. Typical daytime temperatures range roughly 18–32°C depending on season and elevation.

Accessibility

Nearest major airport: Goa (Dabolim) Airport (GOI) — road transfer required (approx. 60–120 km depending on entry point). Nearest towns: Valpoi (Sattari taluka) and other small towns at the sanctuary edges. Public buses and trains reach nearby towns; local taxis/jeeps provide last-mile access. Roads into ghats can be winding and in parts rough — a sturdy vehicle is recommended. Some core forest areas require guided access on foot.

Recommended Duration

1–3 days for a short visit (day hikes, temple visit and birding). 3–5 days if combining multiple trails, village visits and relaxed wildlife observation.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy trekking shoes, lightweight long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (to reduce leech/mosquito bites), rain jacket (monsoon season), hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, camera, basic first-aid and any required medication. Carry sufficient water and snacks for day hikes.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Try local Goan/Konkani dishes in nearby towns (fish curry rice if available, sol kadhi, kokum-based drinks). Local souvenirs include cashew products, spice packets, homemade honey and small handicrafts from village artisans. Respect local customs when buying from tribal communities.
