Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary,Goa

Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary is a biologically important protected area in South Goa that forms part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot. The sanctuary protects contiguous tracts of evergreen and semi-evergreen forests and serves as an important watershed and wildlife corridor linking other protected areas in southern Goa. It supports high biodiversity including several Western Ghats endemic plants, amphibians and reptiles, and a variety of mammals and birds that rely on dense canopy cover and undisturbed interior forest.

Places to visit

  • Dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forest tracts with rich understory
  • Multiple seasonal waterfalls and forest streams (notably the popular Savari waterfall and other cascades after the monsoon)
  • Excellent birdwatching opportunities with many Western Ghats and migratory species
  • Trekking trails, viewpoints and quiet nature walks
  • Opportunities to observe large mammals and smaller endemic fauna in a relatively undisturbed setting

Unique Aspects

  • Part of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot with high species richness and endemism
  • Habitat for large mammals such as gaur, leopard and sloth bear (occasional sightings) and abundant deer and primates
  • Rich amphibian and reptile fauna due to perennial streams and moist forest floor
  • Relatively low tourist density compared with coastal Goa—offers a quieter, more forest-focused experience
  • Connectivity with neighboring forest areas, enhancing its conservation value

Things to do

  • Guided nature walks and short to moderate treks on established trails
  • Birdwatching and wildlife photography—bring binoculars and a telephoto lens
  • Visiting seasonal waterfalls and forest streams (swimming only where officially permitted)
  • Village visits to learn about local forest-dependent communities and traditional livelihoods
  • Participating in or attending occasional forest-department awareness programs (when available)

Best Time to Visit

October to February is generally the best period—post-monsoon greenery, good trails and comfortable temperatures. The monsoon (June–September) brings dramatic waterfalls and very lush forest but trails can be slippery and access may be restricted.

Weather Conditions

Tropical monsoon climate: hot and humid pre-monsoon (March–May), heavy rains in the monsoon season (June–September), and mild, pleasant winters (October–February). Expect humidity and rapid weather changes, especially during and after rains.

Accessibility

Nearest major towns are Sanguem and Quepem; the nearest major railway station is at Margao (Madgaon) and the nearest airport is Goa International Airport (Dabolim). Public buses and shared taxis run to nearby towns; from there, local taxis or hired vehicles are used to reach sanctuary entrances. Roads can be narrow and rough in places—drive carefully, especially during the monsoon.

Recommended Duration

A half-day to full-day visit is sufficient for short walks and waterfall visits; plan 1–2 days if you want to explore deeper trails, do extended birdwatching or visit nearby villages.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Light, breathable clothing for daytime; a waterproof layer or poncho during monsoon; sturdy, closed hiking shoes with good grip; insect repellent and a head net if needed; binoculars, camera, sunhat, reusable water bottle and a basic first-aid kit.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Nearby towns and village stalls offer simple Goan and local cuisine—rice-based dishes, vegetarian preparations and coastal-style fish curries in areas closer to the coast. Local products to consider as souvenirs include cashew-based snacks and sweets, Goan spices, locally produced feni and handcrafted items from regional artisans. Support small local vendors and ensure any purchases follow local regulations (e.g., no wildlife products).
