Itinerary
Start at the Dragon’s Back trailhead (commonly reached from To Tei Wan / Shek O Road or a bus stop near Tai Tam).
Check signage for Dragon’s Back / Shek O Country Park; confirm route and water supply before starting.
Ascend to the ridgeline and follow the Dragon’s Back spine.
Trail is mostly well-defined with short stair sections. Pace yourself — good photo opportunities at the first lookout.
Walk the main ridge section and stop at high viewpoints (e.g., Shek O Peak viewpoints).
Expect strong coastal winds at exposed points; allow time for photos and short breaks.
Descend toward the Big Wave Bay / Shek O area and follow connecting paths to beach/village.
Stairs and steeper sections near the descent — take care if wet.
Relax at Big Wave Bay beach or explore Shek O village for food and transport home.
Public toilets and eateries available; buses/minibuses return to Shau Kei Wan, Shau Kei Wan MTR, or other parts of Hong Kong Island.
Safety Requirements
Carry at least 1–2 liters of water per person (more in hot weather)
Wear sturdy walking shoes with grip (trail has rocky/stair sections)
Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, sunglasses
Check the Hong Kong Observatory weather and typhoon warnings — do not hike during heavy rain or typhoon signals
Be cautious on exposed ridges in strong wind; avoid edges and unstable ground
Carry a basic first-aid kit and mobile phone with charged battery; note that mobile coverage is usually available but can vary
Tips
Start early (sunrise or morning) to avoid midday heat and crowds — early morning offers best light for photos
Bring cash (small amounts) for buses, minibuses and village food stalls — Octopus card commonly accepted on public transport
Public transport access: take MTR to Shau Kei Wan or Chai Wan then bus/minibus to To Tei Wan / Shek O Road trailhead or directly to Big Wave Bay if finishing there
If you prefer a shorter hike, turn back at the main viewpoint instead of descending to Big Wave Bay
Respect local signs and park rules; carry out any litter — the area is popular and preservation depends on visitors
If visibility is poor (haze or rain), consider postponing — the main draw is the coastal view
