High Island Reservoir East Dam (Geopark),Hong Kong

Geological importance: High Island Reservoir East Dam Geopark is part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark (Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region) and showcases spectacular columnar jointed volcanic rocks formed during the Late Cretaceous period (~140–120 million years ago). The hexagonal basalt columns and coastal cliffs provide outstanding evidence of ancient volcanic activity and cooling of pyroclastic flows, making it a key site for earth science education and geomorphology.

Engineering and historical importance: The East Dam (together with the West Dam) created the High Island Reservoir in the 1970s to secure Hong Kong's freshwater supply—a major engineering project of that era. The site therefore combines natural geological value with mid-20th-century infrastructure history.

Places to visit

  • East Dam walkway — a scenic path along the reservoir/dam with panoramic views
  • Columnar basalt formations — extensive hexagonal rock columns exposed along the coast
  • Po Pin Chau (sea stack) — dramatic offshore stack and a highlight for photography
  • Geopark interpretation panels and viewpoints — explanatory signs that help visitors understand the geology
  • Sai Kung coastline & clear waters — nearby beaches, coves and sea views

Unique Aspects

  • Distinct hexagonal columnar jointing in volcanic rock
  • Dramatic coastal cliffs and sea stacks
  • Contrast between freshwater reservoir and the adjacent marine environment
  • Good vantage points for geology, sunrise/sunset and landscape photography

Things to do

  • Walking the East Dam for panoramic reservoir and coastal views
  • Photography of the hexagonal columns, cliffs and Po Pin Chau
  • Guided geology/Geopark tours and educational visits
  • Boat trips from Sai Kung to view sea stacks and coastal geology from the water
  • Hiking nearby trails in Sai Kung East Country Park and birdwatching
  • Sea activities in nearby Sai Kung waters (kayaking/snorkeling) — not in the reservoir itself

Best Time to Visit

Autumn and spring (October–December and March–May) for mild weather and clearer skies; avoid peak summer typhoon season (June–September) if possible.

Weather Conditions

Subtropical climate: hot, humid and wet in summer with frequent showers and occasional typhoons; mild and drier in winter. Bring sun protection in sunny months and waterproof gear during the rainy season.

Entry Fees & Permits

There is no admission fee to visit the East Dam geosite. The outdoor geosite and dam walk are generally open all day, but nearby visitor facilities (if any) may have limited hours—check the Hong Kong Geopark or local government pages for updates.

Accessibility

The geosite is accessible by road. Typical route: travel to Sai Kung town (by public bus or minibus from Kowloon/Hong Kong), then take local buses or taxis toward High Island Reservoir. Driving or taking a taxi from Sai Kung takes roughly 30–40 minutes depending on traffic. Nearest major public transport hubs: MTR stations on Kowloon side (e.g., Diamond Hill/Hang Hau) with onward bus/minibus links to Sai Kung. Nearest airport: Hong Kong International Airport (~50–60 km). Note: some viewpoints involve uneven paths and steps—wear sturdy shoes; limited accessibility for wheelchair users.

Recommended Duration

Plan 1–3 hours for the dam walk and geology viewing; allow a half-day (3–5 hours) or full day if combining with boat trips, hikes or dining in Sai Kung.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy walking shoes, sunhat/sunscreen, plenty of water, light rain jacket (seasonal), camera/binoculars, and insect repellent for trails.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Sai Kung town (nearby) is famous for fresh seafood restaurants—a popular post-visit dining option. Look for local snack shops, geology-themed souvenirs or maps at visitor centers and souvenir outlets in Sai Kung or GeoPark information points.
