Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park,Hong Kong

Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park is one of Hong Kong's important marine protected areas established to conserve rich shallow-water coral communities and intertidal habitats on the northeastern Sai Kung peninsula. The park protects reef flats, seagrass beds and mudflats that support diverse fish, crustaceans and other marine life, and it serves as an important site for education, scientific research and community-led conservation.

Places to visit

  • Shallow coral reefs and reef flats — easy access for snorkelling and marine observation
  • Hoi Ha Wan Visitor Centre — exhibits, educational displays and information about the marine park
  • Intertidal rock pools and mudflats — rich in invertebrates and good for tidepooling
  • Hoi Ha village and pier — small coastal settlement with launch points for boats and kayaks
  • Nearby hiking trails and scenic viewpoints in Sai Kung East and the MacLehose Trail

Unique Aspects

  • High-value shallow-water coral communities (both hard and soft corals) in a relatively sheltered bay
  • Clear, sheltered waters that make the site ideal for snorkelling, tidepooling and education
  • Intertidal habitats (mangrove patches and mudflats) supporting juvenile fish and invertebrates
  • Strong presence of community science, school visits and conservation groups monitoring reef health

Things to do

  • Snorkelling over shallow reef flats (suitable for beginners in calm conditions)
  • Introductory scuba diving and guided dives with local operators (check restrictions and permits)
  • Guided eco-tours and educational programmes at the Visitor Centre
  • Kayaking and small boat trips from Sai Kung town
  • Tidepooling and short shoreline walks to observe marine invertebrates
  • Photography, wildlife watching and citizen-science participation (coral surveys)

Best Time to Visit

April to October is the best period for warm water and snorkelling (calm, clearer seas). Avoid visits during typhoon season and check forecasts. Winters (November–February) are cooler and less optimal for snorkelling but still fine for shore walks and hiking.

Weather Conditions

Subtropical climate: hot, humid summers with sudden showers and occasional typhoons; mild winters. Summer sea temperatures are warm (comfortable for swimming); visibility varies with weather and runoff after heavy rain.

Entry Fees & Permits

There is no entry fee to the marine park itself. The Visitor Centre has limited opening hours and may close on certain weekdays — check the AFCD or Visitor Centre website for current hours and temporary closures.

Accessibility

Hoi Ha Wan is accessible from Sai Kung town by taxi or private car (short drive) and from nearby hiking trails. Limited parking near the village—arrive early on busy days. Local boat/kaito operators running from Sai Kung pier can access nearby beaches; kayaking from Sai Kung is also common. Facilities are basic—expect a small village setting rather than full resort infrastructure.

Recommended Duration

Plan 2–6 hours for a typical visit (short snorkel + Visitor Centre + a shoreline walk). A full day is recommended if combining kayaking, multiple snorkel sites or longer hikes.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Bring swimwear, rash guard or wetsuit (depending on season), reef-safe sunscreen, snorkel/mask/fins, water shoes, hat, drinking water, and a light rain jacket. Non-swimmers should use a life jacket for open-water activities. Pack out all rubbish.

Local Food & Souvenirs

After visiting Hoi Ha Wan, head to Sai Kung town for seafood restaurants, local snacks and casual cafes. Popular local items include fresh seafood dishes and small dried seafood products; souvenirs are typically sold in Sai Kung rather than in Hoi Ha Village itself.
