Sai Kung East Country Park,Hong Kong

Sai Kung East Country Park is one of Hong Kong's most important natural areas on the Sai Kung Peninsula, celebrated for its rugged coastline, pristine sandy beaches and outstanding geological features. The park contains parts of the High Island Reservoir East Dam and associated coastal rock formations that form part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark, making it significant for geology, coastal ecology and outdoor recreation. It also preserves traditional coastal villages and habitats for diverse marine and terrestrial wildlife.

Best Time to Visit

Autumn (October–December) and spring (March–May) for cooler, clearer weather; avoid mid-summer typhoon season (June–September) when seas are rough and trails can be dangerous.

Weather Conditions

Subtropical climate: hot and humid in summer with sudden showers and typhoons possible; mild and drier in autumn and winter. Bring layered clothing and be prepared for sun exposure.

Entry Fees & Permits

The country park itself is free to enter and is open year-round. Specific visitor centres or facilities (if present) have their own opening hours. Camping at designated sites may require a permit or fee — check the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) or local signage.

Accessibility

Access begins from Sai Kung town (reachable by bus/minibus from urban areas and from MTR stations). From Sai Kung Pier there are kai-to boat services to beaches in Tai Long Wan and other bays. Many trails also start from car parks or trailheads such as Pak Tam Chung and nearby access points. Note: some beaches are only reachable by boat or by a moderate to long hike; mobile reception can be intermittent on remote trails.

Recommended Duration

Day trips are common (half-day to full-day hikes). For relaxed exploration, beach time and camping, plan 2–3 days to cover highlights without rushing.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), plenty of water, lightweight rain jacket, swimwear and towel if swimming, basic first-aid, insect repellent and a power bank for electronics. For challenging routes like Sharp Peak, bring gaiters, trekking poles and experience with steep terrain.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Return to Sai Kung town for fresh seafood restaurants and local dai pai dong-style eateries. Popular souvenirs include local dried seafood, artisanal snacks and small handicrafts from village stalls.
