Aride Island Nature Reserve,Seychelles

Aride Island Nature Reserve is one of the Indian Ocean's most important seabird sanctuaries and a flagship site for island conservation in the Seychelles. It protects large breeding colonies of seabirds and several endemic land-bird species, and preserves native coastal woodland and granite habitats. The island's protection has played a vital role in regional conservation successes and species recovery programmes.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round access is possible but the best time for seabird activity and breeding-colony viewing is during the local breeding seasons (often peaking between March and September for many seabirds). Sea conditions are typically calmer from April to November for boat transfers.

Weather Conditions

Tropical maritime climate — warm and humid year-round with a wetter season from November to March. Expect sun, strong coastal winds at times, and sudden short showers.

Accessibility

Accessible only by boat (day trips or charters typically operate from Praslin). Landings are controlled and permitted only with reserve guides. Access is subject to sea conditions and reserve rules; there are no visitor accommodations on the island and facilities are very limited.

Recommended Duration

A typical visit is a half-day (2–4 hours). Full-day trips are possible if combined with other nearby islands, but most visitors spend a guided few hours on Aride.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Wear sturdy closed walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and light breathable clothing. Bring binoculars, a camera, water and a small packed lunch (there are limited or no facilities on the island).

Local Food & Souvenirs

There are no food or souvenir shops on Aride — bring snacks or purchase food on Praslin before departure. To support conservation, consider buying souvenirs or donating through authorised local conservation organisations or visitor centres on Praslin.
