Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve,Seychelles
Vallée de Mai (Praslin, Seychelles) is a globally important remnant of a prehistoric palm forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1983). It is the best-preserved example of Seychelles' native palm forest and is internationally renowned for the endemic coco de mer (Lodoicea maldivica) — the palm that produces the largest seed in the plant kingdom. The reserve is key for biodiversity conservation, scientific research, and as a living example of island evolutionary processes.
Historic Anecdotes
Locally and historically the Vallée de Mai has been linked to myth and lore. The unusual shape and large seeds of the coco de mer inspired legends about fertility and origin myths; for centuries the seeds were rare curiosities and their origin was the subject of mystery until the palms were found on Praslin. The forest is often described in travel literature as a natural "Garden of Eden."

Best Time to Visit
April–October (drier season) is generally the most comfortable time to visit due to lower rainfall and humidity; visits are possible year-round but expect short heavy showers during the wet season (November–March).
Weather Conditions
Tropical climate: warm and humid year-round. Daytime temperatures typically range from mid-20s to low 30s °C (mid-70s to low 90s °F). Sudden rain showers are common outside the drier months.
Entry Fees & Permits
A ticket is required to enter the reserve; typical opening hours are around 08:30–17:00, but exact times and entry fees can change. Guided walks may be available for an additional cost. Always check the official Vallée de Mai or Seychelles Tourism website for current fees and opening hours before travel.
Accessibility
Located on Praslin Island. Nearest access: Praslin Airport (domestic flight from Mahé) or ferry to Baie Sainte Anne (Praslin) followed by a short drive. The reserve is about a 15–25 minute drive from the main ferry terminal depending on traffic. On-site paths include raised boardwalks and some natural trails; parts can be uneven, wet, or narrow—limited wheelchair accessibility in some sections. Accessible by car, taxi, or local buses on Praslin.
Recommended Duration
Plan 1–2 hours for a relaxed visit (shorter if only passing through, longer if you want guided tours or extended photography).
Clothing & Gear Tips
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, lightweight breathable clothing, a rain jacket or poncho, hat and sun protection, and bring water. Insect repellent is recommended. A good camera or binoculars are useful for wildlife viewing.
Local Food & Souvenirs
On Praslin you can enjoy Seychelles Creole dishes (fresh grilled fish, coconut-based curries, tropical fruits). Souvenirs: certified coco de mer products and local handicrafts, vanilla, cinnamon and spice products — note that trade in coco de mer is regulated and export/import of whole seeds is subject to international and national controls (CITES and Seychelles law). Buy souvenirs from reputable, legal vendors and request certification when necessary.
