Tukad Cepung cave waterfall

Tukad Cepung — commonly called Cepung Cave Waterfall — is a dramatic, partially enclosed waterfall set inside a steep rocky gorge in Bangli Regency, central Bali. The waterfall pours down through a gap in the cliff and into a narrow canyon; at certain times of day a shaft of sunlight pierces the cave opening producing a spectacular ‘light beam’ effect. The setting is lush, photogenic and feels like a hidden gem away from crowded mainstream attractions.

Highlights

  • Dramatic cave-like canyon with waterfall pouring through a cliff gap

  • Photogenic sunbeam/light shaft inside the cave (best on clear mornings)

  • Shallow turquoise pool and mossy rock walls

  • Short, adventurous walk and scramble — feels like a hidden canyon

  • Fewer crowds than many Bali highlights if visited early

Itinerary

  1. Arrive at the small parking/entrance area and pay the local entrance fee.

There are a few steps down to the path; small warung (snack stalls) may be nearby.

  2. Follow the dirt path and descend the stone steps into the gorge (15–20 minutes).

The path includes some uneven steps and a final scramble through a narrow opening — wear sturdy footwear.

  3. Enter the canyon and approach the waterfall. Spend time photographing the cave, rock formations and the light beam if present.

Tread carefully on wet, slippery rocks. Use waterproof protection for cameras.

  4. You can wade in the shallow pool near the fall if conditions allow, then return up the trail.

Avoid swimming after heavy rain due to stronger currents and murky water. Allow extra time for slow walkers.

Safety Requirements

  • Wear footwear with good grip — rocks and steps are slippery when wet.

  • Avoid visiting during or immediately after heavy rain — flash floods and stronger currents can occur in the canyon.

  • Not suitable for people with limited mobility due to steep, uneven steps and narrow passages.

  • Watch children closely; the pool and wet rocks are hazardous.

  • Bring a basic first-aid kit and inform someone of your plans if visiting independently.

Tips

  • Arrive early (around opening) to avoid crowds and capture the sunlight beam through the cave.

  • Wear water shoes or sandals with a good grip and quick-drying clothes.

  • Bring a waterproof bag for valuables and a dry change of clothes.

  • Carry small-denomination Indonesian rupiah (cash) for entrance, parking and local guides.

  • Respect the site and local residents — don’t leave trash, and follow any posted rules.

  • Consider hiring a local guide at the entrance for safe navigation and local insights.

  • Check the weather forecast; avoid the site during heavy rain or storms.

  • If photographing the light beam, experiment with exposure and shoot from different vantage points — a tripod or steadying support helps in low light.
