Dochula Pass and 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens
Dochula Pass (Dokhla or Dochula) is a scenic mountain pass on the road between Thimphu and Punakha, famous for the dramatic memorial site of 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens (stupas). Built to honor Bhutanese soldiers and as a monument to peace, the chortens sit on a ridge at about 3,100 metres, offering panoramic views of the eastern Himalayan range on clear days. The site includes a decorated pavilion, prayer flags, short walking trails, and a small cafe/tea stall.

Safety Requirements
Altitude: Dochula is around 3,100 m (10,200 ft). Allow time to acclimatize if coming from low elevations.
Weather: Dress in layers; conditions change rapidly and can be much colder than Thimphu. Carry rain and wind protection.
Roads: Mountain roads can be narrow and winding; use experienced drivers and drive cautiously, especially in fog, rain, or snow.
Respect: The chortens are sacred — behave respectfully, avoid loud noise, do not climb on stupas, and follow any posted rules.
Health: Bring basic medications, sun protection (UV is stronger at altitude), and stay hydrated.
Tips
Arrive early (sunrise–midmorning) for the clearest views and fewer visitors.
Bring a warm jacket, hat, and gloves even in warmer months — temperatures drop significantly at the pass.
Carry a camera with a telephoto lens or zoom for mountain shots and a wide angle for the chorten rows.
If visiting during the Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival (usually December), book transport and accommodation in advance.
Support local vendors: small refreshments and handicrafts are available at the site.
Be mindful when taking photos of locals and religious ceremonies; ask permission where appropriate.
If continuing to Punakha, allow extra time for stops and variable road conditions.
