Dochula Pass,Bhutan

Dochula Pass (3,100 m / 10,200 ft) is a mountain pass in Bhutan on the road from Thimphu to Punakha. It holds national significance as a symbol of Bhutanese resilience and peace; the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens (stupas) at the pass were built by the eldest Queen Mother, Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, in memory of Bhutanese soldiers who fell in the 2003 conflict. The pass offers panoramic Himalayan views and is a cultural landmark for both locals and visitors.

Weather Conditions

Cool mountain climate; temperatures can range from near freezing in winter to mild in summer at daytime. Winds can be strong and fog/clouds frequent; always expect rapid weather changes.

Entry Fees & Permits

No specific entry fee for the pass itself. The site is open year-round, but facilities (cafeteria, stalls) have variable hours. The Druk Wangyal Festival has scheduled events and may require tickets or coordination with local tour operators.

Accessibility

Accessible by road on the Thimphu–Punakha highway approximately 45–60 minutes from Thimphu (depending on stops). Roads are paved but can be narrow and steep; public buses, taxis, and private vehicles are common. Nearest major airport: Paro International Airport (~1.5–2 hours from Dochula by car). Limited facilities for mobility-impaired visitors; paths around the chortens include steps and uneven surfaces.

Recommended Duration

1–3 hours for a typical visit (including viewpoints, short walks, and refreshments). Combine with a Thimphu or Punakha day trip for a full-day itinerary.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Warm layers, windproof jacket, sturdy walking shoes, hat and gloves in colder months, sunglasses and sunscreen for high-altitude sun. Camera with a zoom lens for landscape shots.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Local snacks and hot beverages at the cafeteria (including Bhutanese tea and momos). Souvenirs include prayer flags, small chorten models, local handicrafts, and textiles. Buy from official stalls to support local vendors.
