Gaumukh–Tapovan trek
A classic high-altitude trek in the Gangotri region of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The route leads from the temple town of Gangotri to the snout of the Gangotri Glacier (Gaumukh) and the scenic alpine meadows of Tapovan beneath the towering Shivling peak. The trek combines pilgrimage, spectacular glacier views, and high-altitude meadow camping.

Itinerary
Drive to Uttarkashi/Gangotri base (from Rishikesh/Haridwar). Overnight in Uttarkashi or Gangotri depending on schedule.
Check permits, buy last-minute supplies, acclimatize; Gangotri temple visit if time permits.
Gangotri to Bhojwasa (10–14 km; 4–6 hours)
Trail follows the Bhagirathi River. Gentle ascent; forested sections and river views. Overnight at tents/guesthouse in Bhojwasa (~3,400 m).
Bhojwasa to Gaumukh and Tapovan (day trek to Gaumukh ~2–3 hours; Tapovan additional 2–4 hours one-way)
Reach Gaumukh (snout) early; continue over moraine to Tapovan meadow (if conditions and fitness permit). Tapovan is at high altitude (~4,200 m) — strong acclimatization and careful judgment required. Camp/return to Bhojwasa depending on plan.
Explore Tapovan / rest day / return to Bhojwasa
Use this day for photography, short hikes, and extra acclimatization. If weather or altitude is adverse, return to Bhojwasa.
Bhojwasa to Gangotri, drive back to Uttarkashi/Rishikesh
Descend to Gangotri; return journey to Uttarkashi or onward travel to Rishikesh/Haridwar.
Safety Requirements
Acclimatization and awareness of acute mountain sickness (AMS); ascend slowly and include rest days
Travel with an experienced guide or a licensed operator; local porters recommended for equipment
Permits: Gangotri/forest/park permits where required (check current local rules)
Proper high-altitude clothing, sleeping bags rated to sub-zero, insulated boots; crampons and ice-axe if snow/ice conditions exist
Carry a first-aid kit, altitude medication (consult a physician), and emergency communication (satphone/PLB recommended in remote stretches)

Acclimatize: spend a night at Gangotri/Bhojwasa before pushing to Tapovan; listen to your body.

Hydration & food: carry water purification tablets or filter; eat high-energy food and avoid alcohol on trek.
Cash & permits: ATMs are not available on trail; carry sufficient cash and keep permit copies.
Respect local culture: Gangotri is a sacred site — maintain decorum, don't pollute the river or meadows.
Plan for contingency: weather can change fast — build spare days into itinerary and carry evacuation insurance.
