Itinerary
Travel to Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun and overnight stay. Alternatively proceed to Joshimath if time permits.
Start early next day for long road journey; rest well to prepare for higher altitudes.
Drive from Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun to Joshimath/Govindghat (6–10 hours depending on start).
Road passes scenic landscapes; reach Govindghat and continue (walk/jeep/trek) to Ghangaria (approx 13 km by foot from Govindghat, 5–7 hours).
Ghangaria to Valley of Flowers return (6–8 hours total)
Early start to walk 3–4 km to the valley entrance, spend time exploring meadows and return to Ghangaria by late afternoon.
Optional: Trek to Hemkund Sahib (14 km round-trip from Ghangaria) or rest and explore local area; return to Govindghat and onwards to Joshimath.
Hemkund involves steeper climb and higher altitude (~4,329 m) — start pre-dawn for best conditions.
Drive back to Haridwar/Rishikesh/Dehradun (or continue onward journey).
Allow buffer for weather or road delays.
Safety Requirements
Obtain Valley of Flowers National Park entry permit and follow park rules (no plucking of flowers).
Acclimatize gradually—Ghangaria sits at ~3,100 m; Hemkund is ~4,329 m—allow extra time and avoid rapid ascent.
Carry warm layers, waterproofs and good trekking boots; weather is unpredictable with sudden rain and fog.
Hire a local guide if unfamiliar with high-altitude trekking; follow marked trails and do not stray into protected areas.
Be prepared with basic first-aid, altitude sickness medication (consult a doctor), and emergency contact details (nearest medical help in Joshimath/Govindghat).
Respect wildlife and biodiversity—no littering, avoid loud noises, and use biodegradable products where possible.
Tips
Book permits and accommodation early during peak months (July–August).
Carry sufficient cash—ATMs are unreliable beyond Joshimath/Govindghat; mobile network is limited in Ghangaria.
Pack a rain jacket, thermal layers, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), trekking poles and a headlamp.
Stay hydrated and carry high-energy snacks for the trek (nuts, energy bars, dry fruits).
Consider hiring a porter or mule for luggage between Govindghat and Ghangaria if needed (helps reduce fatigue).
Start early each day to avoid afternoon clouding and enjoy the best light for photography.
Respect local culture and the sanctity of Hemkund Sahib—follow guidelines if visiting the gurudwara.
Travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking is recommended.
