Hemkund Sahib,Uttarakhand
Hemkund Sahib (also Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara) is a highly revered Sikh pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand. Situated in a high-altitude glacial basin, it holds religious importance for Sikhs as a place associated with the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. The site combines strong cultural and spiritual significance with outstanding natural beauty — an alpine lake surrounded by snow-clad peaks and a glacial cirque.

Historic Anecdotes
The name 'Hemkund' means 'Lake of Snow'. According to Sikh tradition, Hemkund is associated with Guru Gobind Singh, who is believed to have meditated in the area. Local legends and oral histories speak of the lake's purity and the miraculous nature of the place; pilgrims report deep spiritual experiences and tales of healing and blessings attributed to visiting the gurudwara and the lake.

Best Time to Visit
Late May/June to October. For wildflowers, July–August is best; for clearer skies and less rain, September is often recommended.
Weather Conditions
Alpine climate: cold at night even in summer, temperatures can drop near or below freezing at Hemkund. Monsoon (mid-June to September) brings rain, possible landslides, and slippery trails. Sudden weather changes are common at high altitude.
Entry Fees & Permits
There is no entry fee for the Gurudwara; langar is free to all pilgrims during the open season. The gurudwara and associated services are typically available only during the summer pilgrimage season (roughly May/June to October) — outside this period heavy snow makes access impossible. If you plan to visit the Valley of Flowers on the same trip, be aware the National Park requires a paid entry permit and an entry timing window.
Accessibility
Typical access route: travel by road to Govindghat (road head). From Govindghat you reach Ghangaria (the base village for Hemkund and Valley of Flowers) by road/trek — many pilgrims walk or use shared taxis/jeeps where available. From Ghangaria it is a steep trek to Hemkund Sahib (several kilometres uphill). Nearest airport: Jolly Grant (Dehradun) — from there a long road journey to Govindghat. Nearest major railheads: Rishikesh / Haridwar / Kathgodam (followed by road transport). Facilities above Ghangaria are basic; mobile coverage and medical facilities are limited at high altitude.
Recommended Duration
For Hemkund Sahib alone: 2–3 days (travel to Ghangaria and day-trip to Hemkund). To combine Hemkund with the Valley of Flowers: 3–5 days depending on pace and acclimatization needs.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Warm layered clothing (thermal base layers, fleece, insulated jacket), waterproof outer shell, sturdy trekking boots, trekking poles, sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat), warm gloves and woolen cap. Pack a basic first-aid kit and medication for altitude sickness (acetazolamide only after consulting a doctor).
Local Food & Souvenirs
Enjoy the free langar at the gurudwara (simple vegetarian meals). In Govindghat/Ghangaria you can find basic Kumaoni dishes and tea/refreshments. Souvenirs include religious items (prayer books, karas), warm woolens, local handicrafts, and postcards/photographs of the Valley of Flowers.
