Best Time to Visit

June to mid‑September and late September to October (post‑monsoon window). Summer months offer the most accessible trekking conditions; after October snow can make the route challenging or impassable.

Weather Conditions

Alpine conditions: cool to cold in summer, frequently freezing at night. Weather is unpredictable with sudden storms; temperatures can range from around +5 to +15°C in daytime (summer) and fall below freezing at night. Expect wind chill and strong UV at altitude.

Accessibility

Accessible only by multi‑day high‑altitude trek. Typical approach starts from Gangotri (road head) and proceeds on foot via camps such as Bhojbasa/Chaukhamba approaches depending on route. The trail involves steep sections, river crossings and glacier approaches; not suitable for inexperienced walkers. Requires good physical fitness and acclimatization.

Recommended Duration

Allocate 4–7 days for the trek portion from Gangotri (round trip) depending on route, pace and acclimatization needs. Add extra days for acclimatization (1–2 days) if coming from lower altitudes.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Warm layers (base, insulating, waterproof shell), down jacket, high‑altitude sleeping bag, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, gaiters, trekking poles, sunglasses with UV protection, broad‑spectrum sunscreen, personal first‑aid and altitude sickness medication, and a headlamp. Carry sufficient water purification and high‑energy food.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Food on route is basic high‑energy trekking fare provided by local camps or porters/guides (rice, dals, soups, simple vegetables, tea). Bring snacks you prefer. Souvenirs and handicrafts (woolens, local religious items) are available in towns such as Uttarkashi and Gangotri before/after the trek.
