Roopkund,Uttarakhand
Roopkund, also known as the 'Skeleton Lake', is a high-altitude glacial lake (about 5,029 m / 16,499 ft) in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand (Chamoli district). It is of major scientific interest because of the thousands of human skeletal remains visible around the lake when snow melts. Archaeological and genetic studies have shown that the remains date to multiple periods and include diverse ancestries, offering insights into historic human migrations, paleoepidemiology, and Himalayan life. Naturally, Roopkund is important for alpine ecology, glaciology, and as a dramatic scenic feature beneath peaks of the Trishul massif.

Best Time to Visit
Late May to early June and September to mid-October (pre-monsoon and post-monsoon windows offer the best trekking conditions and clearer skies). Avoid monsoon (July–August) and winter (November–April) due to heavy snow and high risks.
Weather Conditions
Alpine conditions: cold to freezing temperatures, especially at night; daytime can be chilly but sunny. Sudden weather changes, afternoon storms and hail are possible even in the trekking season. Expect snow on approaches early/late season.
Accessibility
Nearest major railhead: Kathgodam (approx. 250–300 km by road to Lohajung). Nearest airports: Pantnagar (closer but with limited flights) and Dehradun (Jolly Grant, larger; ~8–10 hours by road). Trek difficulty: moderate to strenuous with high-altitude exposure; requires good fitness and acclimatization.
Recommended Duration
7–10 days for a comfortable trek with acclimatization (typical itineraries are 7–9 days from Lohajung and back).
