Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary,Uttarakhand
Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary is an ecologically important protected area in Uttarakhand that serves as a northern buffer and biological corridor to the larger Corbett landscape. It protects a mosaic of riverine habitats, sal forests, grasslands and mixed deciduous forest that support significant mammal and bird populations. The sanctuary contributes to regional biodiversity conservation, watershed protection (draining into the Sonanadi and Kosi systems) and local livelihoods through regulated eco-tourism.

Places to visit
- Riverine landscapes and the Sonanadi River — scenic riverbanks and small waterfalls
- Rich wildlife — Bengal tiger, leopard, Himalayan black bear (sloth bear), sambar, chital (spotted deer), barking deer and wild pig
- Birdlife — a diverse bird community including raptors, kingfishers, woodpeckers and many resident and migratory species
- Flora — stands of Sal, mixed deciduous forest, grasslands and riparian vegetation
- Proximity to Corbett Tiger Reserve — often visited together for a broader wildlife experience
Unique Aspects
- Riverine ecosystem with mixed terrain (valleys, ridges and grasslands)
- Good opportunities for birdwatching and photography year-round
- Less crowded and more intimate wildlife viewing compared with some larger parks
- Important corridor for wildlife movement between protected areas
Things to do
- Guided nature walks and short treks (daytime only, with permits)
- Wildlife watching and photography from designated trails and viewpoints
- Birdwatching — dawn and early morning hours are best
- River-side relaxation and nature interpretation
- Community-led eco-tours and village visits in surrounding Kumaoni settlements
Best Time to Visit
October to June (cool, dry months are ideal). The monsoon (July–September) brings heavy rain and some trails may be closed or slippery.
Weather Conditions
Subtropical to temperate: summers warm to hot, winters cool to cold with morning fog, and monsoon brings heavy localized rainfall. Temperatures vary with elevation and season.
Accessibility
Nearest major rail/head and gateway to the region: Ramnagar (gateway to Corbett). Nearest regional airport: Pantnagar; major international airport option: Delhi (longer drive). Access is usually by road from Ramnagar or nearby towns; some internal tracks require a 4x4 or authorized vehicles. Mobile connectivity may be patchy; follow forest department guidance for routes and permitted areas.
Recommended Duration
1–2 days for a short visit; 2–3 days recommended for birdwatchers or wildlife enthusiasts who want better chances of sightings.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Light, breathable clothing for summer + warm layers for early mornings and winter; sturdy walking shoes, rain jacket in the monsoon, binoculars, camera with telephoto lens, insect repellent, sun protection and a reusable water bottle.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Try local Kumaoni dishes at nearby towns (e.g., aloo ke gutke, baadi). Souvenir options include locally made handloom textiles, woodcraft and honey from authorized local producers (avoid purchasing wildlife products).
