Broken Beach (Pasih Uug),Bali

Pasih Uug (Broken Beach) is a striking natural limestone formation on the western coast of Nusa Penida, Bali. It is geologically significant as a collapsed sea cave that formed a circular cove with a natural arch connecting the open ocean to the inner lagoon. The site is an iconic example of Nusa Penida's dramatic coastal erosion and karst landscape and has become an internationally recognised photo and sightseeing destination.

Best Time to Visit

Dry season (April–October) for clearer skies and calmer seas; early morning or late afternoon are best for softer light and fewer crowds. Sunset visits can be scenic but access and visibility may be limited after dark.

Weather Conditions

Tropical coastal climate — warm and humid year-round. Dry season (Apr–Oct) is sunnier and drier; wet season (Nov–Mar) brings heavy showers and rough seas. Expect strong coastal winds at times.

Entry Fees & Permits

The viewpoint area is open daily during daylight hours. There is often a nominal local entrance fee and/or parking charge (amounts vary and are subject to change) — bring small cash (IDR). Tour operators commonly include the stop in island day-trip itineraries.

Accessibility

Reachable from Bali via fast boat from Sanur or Padang Bai to Nusa Penida (Toya Pakeh/Sampalan harbors) — boat rides typically 30–45 minutes. From the harbor, Broken Beach is a 30–60 minute drive depending on road conditions. Roads on Nusa Penida can be narrow, steep and bumpy; hiring a driver/motorbike or joining a guided tour is recommended. Nearest major airport: Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) on Bali mainland. Limited public transport on the island; some viewpoints have uneven ground and cliff edges — not suitable for visitors with limited mobility.

Recommended Duration

Plan 1–3 hours for the Broken Beach & Angel's Billabong area as part of a half-day or full-day Nusa Penida itinerary. If combining with other island sites, allow a full day.

Clothing & Gear Tips

Wear sturdy shoes for uneven paths, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), light breathable clothing, and bring plenty of water. If you plan to visit Angel's Billabong or go snorkeling, pack swimwear and a towel. Avoid approaching cliff edges; supervise children closely.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Local warungs near the harbors and village areas serve nasi campur, fresh seafood, grilled fish, and coconut-based snacks. Typical souvenirs include sarongs, woven bags, locally made handicrafts and wood carvings. Bring cash (IDR) for small purchases; bargaining is common but should be respectful.
