Hong Kong visa & passport guide
Everything Indian passport holders need to visit Hong Kong — visa type, fees, processing time, documents, and the step-by-step application process.
Hong Kong Visa for Indian Passport Holders
Indian passport holders do not need a traditional visa for a short tourist trip to Hong Kong, but they must complete a free online Pre-arrival Registration (PAR) with the Hong Kong Immigration Department before boarding the flight. Once the PAR is approved, you get visa-free entry for up to 14 days per visit, and the registration stays valid for 6 months with multiple entries. Airlines will not let you board without a valid PAR notification slip, so treat it as compulsory paperwork rather than an optional step.
Documents Required
- Machine-readable Indian passport (the PAR is tied to this exact passport number)
- Printed or saved copy of the approved Pre-arrival Registration notification slip
- Confirmed return or onward air ticket departing within 14 days
- Hotel booking confirmation or host address in Hong Kong
- Proof of sufficient funds: recent bank statement, forex card or credit card
- Travel insurance (not mandatory but strongly advised)
- Onward country visa if you are continuing to Macau, Mainland China or elsewhere
How to Apply
- 1Go to the Hong Kong Immigration Department website and open the Pre-arrival Registration for Indian Nationals page.
- 2Fill in your name exactly as printed in the passport, passport number, date and place of birth, and travel details.
- 3Submit the form and note the registration number shown on screen.
- 4Download and print the PAR notification slip, or save a clear copy on your phone. Keep it with your passport.
- 5Carry the slip at the check-in counter and at Hong Kong immigration, along with your return ticket and hotel booking.
- 6If your PAR is refused or you plan to stay beyond 14 days, apply for a visa through the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in India.
Good to Know
- The PAR is linked to your passport number. If you renew your passport after registering, you must do a fresh PAR.
- Names must match the passport exactly. A missing middle name or spelling variation is the most common reason for boarding denial.
- If you are only transiting through Hong Kong International Airport for under 7 days with a confirmed onward ticket and do not clear immigration, PAR is not required. But if you want to step out into the city, you need it.
- Hong Kong and Macau are separate immigration zones. Indian passport holders travelling to Macau need their own entry arrangement, and re-entering Hong Kong counts as a new 14-day stay under the same PAR.
- Immigration officers commonly ask about your hotel, length of stay and return flight date. Have the printed bookings ready rather than searching your email at the counter.
- Carry some Hong Kong Dollars in cash. Octopus card top-ups and small eateries in Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po may not accept Indian cards.
- October to December is the most comfortable window, with daytime temperatures around 22-27°C. June to August is hot, humid and the typhoon season.
- Do not overstay the 14-day limit. Hong Kong records overstays strictly and it will affect future PAR approvals.
