Shipwreck dive at the Victory Wreck

Victory Wreck is a popular, easily accessible wreck dive located just off Hulhulé Island near Malé in North Malé (Kaafu) Atoll. The site features a sunken ship lying on a sandy bottom with abundant marine growth and marine life attracted to the structure. The wreck offers an exciting mix of scenic swim-throughs, macro and pelagic sightings, and is suitable for advanced open water divers and guided intermediate divers.

Location

Victory Wreck (near Hulhulé Island, approach from Hulhulé/Velana International Airport side), Malé / Hulhulé, Maldives

Duration

Typical outing 3–6 hours total. Each dive: 40–60 minutes bottom time depending on depth, air consumption and local rules. Allow additional time for briefings, surface interval and transfers.

Best Time to Visit

November to April (dry northeast monsoon) — calmer seas, better visibility and more predictable dive conditions. May to October can still offer good diving but expect more variable weather and occasional reduced visibility.

Pricing

Approximate: USD 60–90 for a single-boat dive (from Malé/Hulhulé liveaboards or day trip operators). USD 120–180 for half-day or full-day trips that include multiple dives, transfers, and equipment rental. Prices vary by operator, season, and whether pick-up is required from a resort or Malé.

Activity Type

Scuba diving (wreck dive)

Coordinates

Lat: 4.235, Lng: 73.535

Highlights

  • Accessible wreck within short boat ride from Hulhulé/Malé

  • Wreck structure with overhangs and swim-throughs (guided only for penetration)

  • Good macro life (shrimp, nudibranchs) plus resident reef fishes and frequent pelagic visitors

  • Excellent photo opportunities — encrusting corals and sponges create colorful scenes

  • Short dives suitable as part of a half-day or full-day dive program

Itinerary

  1. Meet at dive shop or pier; equipment check and paperwork

Arrive 20–30 minutes early if you're collecting rental gear.

  2. Boat ride to Victory Wreck (short transfer from Hulhulé)

Transfer times vary; brief local orientation on the boat.

  3. First dive: descent, guided exploration of wreck

Briefing covers maximum depth, entry/exit points and no-penetration or restricted-penetration rules.

  4. Surface interval on boat; light snack and debrief

Second dive may be available depending on schedule (nearby reef).

  5. Return to pier, gear rinse and post-dive administration

Return times depend on operator and additional dives.

Safety Requirements

  • Minimum certification: Open Water Diver (some operators require Advanced Open Water for wrecks deeper than 24–30 m or to allow guided penetration)

  • Minimum age: typically 12–15 years depending on operator

  • Medical fitness to dive — complete required medical questionnaire; doctor clearance if necessary

  • No solo diving — dives conducted with a guide or buddy

  • Follow guide instructions for entry, exit and no-penetration rules unless you hold appropriate wreck-penetration training

  • Watch for currents and plan entry/exit accordingly; carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) when required

  • Respect depth limits and decompression rules; carry a dive computer or depth/time tables

Tips

  • Bring your logbook and certification card — operators will check credentials.

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and rinse equipment to protect coral life.

  • If photographing, bring proper dive lights and a wide-angle housing or lens for structural shots; secure all camera gear.

  • Consider renting a SMB and reef hook if planning drift segments with current.

  • Book dives in the morning for typically better visibility and calmer conditions.

  • Check with your operator about depth and penetration rules before planning to enter the wreck.

  • Bring cash for park or landing fees, tips, and small purchases — some operators accept card but cash can be more convenient.

  • If you're prone to seasickness, take preventative measures (medication, ginger) before the boat trip.
