The dry season from November to April offers the best weather conditions, with December to March being optimal. Temperatures range 26–32°C year-round. This period features clear skies, calm seas, and superior underwater visibility for diving and snorkeling.

The wet season runs May to October, bringing intermittent tropical showers and rougher seas. However, this period provides better surfing conditions and increased manta ray activity, particularly in Baa Atoll. Accommodation rates are lower and crowds smaller during wet season months.

The Maldives maintains tropical climate throughout the year with no winter season. The country operates on Maldives Time (UTC+5), which is 30 minutes behind Indian Standard Time.

Direct flights operate from India to Velana International Airport (MLE) near Malé from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, Chennai, and Thiruvananthapuram. Flight times range from 2–3.5 hours. Multiple airlines provide these routes.

From the airport, transportation to resorts includes speedboats (10–120 minutes), seaplanes (daytime only for distant atolls), domestic flights to regional airports with speedboat connections, and public ferries to local islands. Taxis operate within Malé and Hulhumalé.

Most resorts arrange transfers as part of accommodation packages. Confirm your transfer method when booking, as options vary by resort location and distance from the main airport.

Indian citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival in the Maldives. No advance application is required. Required documents include a valid passport with minimum 6 months validity, confirmed accommodation booking, return flight tickets, and proof of sufficient funds. Immigration processing occurs at Velana International Airport. Immigration officers may request hotel confirmation or guesthouse booking details during entry. Extensions beyond 30 days require application through Maldivian immigration authorities. The visa permits tourism activities only. Employment is prohibited on tourist visas.

Water-based transport dominates due to the scattered island geography. Speedboats handle most resort transfers and inter-island travel, taking 10 minutes to 2 hours depending on distance. Seaplanes serve distant atolls but operate only during daylight hours. Domestic flights connect to regional airports at Gan Island, Maafaru, and Hanimaadhoo, requiring speedboat connections afterward. Public ferries offer budget inter-island transport but run less frequently and move slower than speedboats. Malé and Hulhumalé have taxis and buses for local transport. Resort islands and local islands rely on walking and bicycles due to their small size. Most resorts arrange transfers in advance.

The Maldives has three accommodation types: luxury resorts on private islands, mid-range resorts, and guesthouses on local islands. Luxury resorts like Conrad Maldives, Baros, and Gili Lankanfushi feature overwater villas and beachfront suites. Mid-range options include Kurumba and Meeru Island resorts. Budget guesthouses operate on local islands such as Maafushi, Fulidhoo, and Ukulhas.

North and South Malé Atolls provide speedboat transfers from the airport within 45 minutes. Baa Atoll offers manta ray diving sites, while South Ari Atoll has whale shark encounters. Local island guesthouses cost significantly less than resorts and allow interaction with Maldivian communities. Peak season runs December through March, requiring advance booking.

Malé City features the Grand Friday Mosque, Islamic Centre, and local markets. Hulhumalé Beach provides accessible beaches near the airport. Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, hosts manta ray aggregations from June to November. South Ari Atoll offers year-round whale shark sightings. Addu Atoll contains WWII historical sites and crosses the Equator. Vaadhoo Island occasionally displays bioluminescent plankton creating glowing waters at night. Common activities include house reef snorkeling, sunset dolphin watching, sandbank visits, and island-hopping tours. Most resort islands maintain house reefs suitable for snorkeling and organize excursions to nearby atolls. Select your base atoll based on preferred marine life and activities.

Maldivian cuisine features fresh seafood, coconut, and rice as staples. Essential dishes include Mas Huni (shredded tuna with coconut and chili served with roshi flatbread), Garudhiya (clear tuna broth with rice), and Rihaakuru (concentrated tuna paste). Traditional snacks called hedhikaa include gulha (tuna dumplings), bajiya (curried pastries), and bis keemiya (vegetable rolls). Coconut and seafood curries vary from mild to spicy. Resorts serve international cuisine with vegetarian and Jain options. In Malé Local Market, local dishes are widely available alongside spices and fresh produce. Local islands provide authentic Maldivian meals at lower costs than resorts. Fresh tropical fruits, coconut water, and locally-made ice cream are widely available.
