Sri Lanka has two distinct monsoon patterns that determine optimal travel timing by region. The west and south coasts (Colombo, Galle, Mirissa) and hill country (Kandy, Ella, Nuwara Eliya) experience dry conditions December through March. The east and north coasts (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, Jaffna) have their dry season May through September. Highland temperatures drop to 6–12°C during December–February, requiring warm clothing. The southwest monsoon affects western and southern regions May–September, while the northeast monsoon impacts eastern areas October–January. March–May provides warm but comfortable weather across most regions. Monsoon periods offer lower accommodation rates and fewer tourists in affected areas.

Air travel to Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo is the primary route from India. Direct flights operate from Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, Delhi, Trichy, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Thiruvananthapuram. Flight duration ranges from 1–3 hours based on departure city. Two additional airports serve Sri Lanka: Ratmalana (RML) near Colombo and Mattala (HRI), though Mattala has limited operations. Ferry services between South India and North Sri Lanka operate sporadically and schedules change frequently. Road and rail connections do not exist between India and Sri Lanka due to the island's geography.

Indians need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka. Apply online through the official Sri Lankan government portal before travel. Processing takes 24–48 hours. The ETA permits stays up to 30 days for tourism. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival date. Sri Lanka occasionally offers visa fee waivers or promotional schemes for Indian tourists. Current ETA fees and requirements change periodically. Sri Lanka's main transportation options include trains, buses, tuk-tuks, ride-hailing services, and hired vehicles. The railway connects major cities with scenic routes from Colombo to Kandy–Ella and Colombo to Galle. Advance booking is recommended for popular train sectors. Buses operate frequently between cities, with air-conditioned coaches available on main routes. Tuk-tuks are widely available; use the PickMe app or negotiate fares in advance. PickMe operates island-wide while Uber serves primarily Colombo. Chauffeur-driven cars and taxis provide comfortable travel with local expertise. Limited domestic flights and seasonal seaplane services cover longer distances. Many visitors hire cars with drivers for multi-city tours.

Sri Lanka accommodations range from $10 budget guesthouses to $500+ luxury resorts. In Colombo, Galle Face and Cinnamon Gardens areas provide central access to business districts and attractions. Coastal options include Galle Fort for colonial architecture, Mirissa and Weligama for whale watching and surfing, and Unawatuna for bars and restaurants. Hill country locations are Kandy for cultural sites, Ella for mountain views, and Nuwara Eliya for tea plantations. Wildlife lodges operate near Yala and Udawalawe national parks. Major hotel chains include Jetwing, Cinnamon, and Shangri-La. Tea estate bungalows and eco-lodges offer alternative stays. Reserve accommodations 2–3 months ahead for December–March peak season.

Sri Lanka's top attractions include Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a 5th-century palace with ancient frescoes, and Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring Dutch colonial architecture. The Kandy–Ella train route passes through tea plantations and takes 6–7 hours. Kandy houses the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, while Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa contain ancient ruins from former capitals. Yala National Park offers leopard and elephant safaris. Whale watching operates from Mirissa between December and April. Horton Plains National Park features the World's End cliff viewpoint. Other key sites include Dambulla Cave Temple, Ella's Nine Arches Bridge, Nuwara Eliya's tea estates, and Jaffna's cultural sites in the north.

Sri Lankan cuisine centers on rice and curry platters featuring multiple vegetable and meat curries served together. Essential dishes include hoppers (fermented rice flour pancakes) and egg hoppers, string hoppers with pol sambol (coconut relish), and kottu roti (chopped flatbread stir-fried with vegetables and curry). Regional specialties include Jaffna crab curry, ambul thiyal (sour fish curry), and lamprais (rice and curry wrapped in banana leaves). Traditional desserts are buffalo curd with kithul treacle and watalappam (coconut custard). Ceylon tea is available at plantations and tea houses. Vegetarian options include dal curries, jackfruit curry, and coconut-based dishes. Street food from busy stalls is typically safe to eat.
