Disembark at Demodara or Ella (depending on schedule) to walk to the Nine Arch Bridge for photos. The bridge is a roughly 20–40 minute walk from Ella station through tea paths.
Arrival in Ella and onward options
Arrive in Ella in the early afternoon. From here you can hike Little Adam’s Peak, visit Ravana Falls or continue your onward travel by bus/taxi.
Safety Requirements
Keep bags and valuables in sight — trains can be crowded and pickpocketing occurs
Do not lean out of doors or windows when the train is moving
Follow conductor/station staff instructions when boarding or disembarking
If walking to Nine Arch Bridge, stick to paths and avoid walking on the tracks; trains still run
If you have mobility issues, note that many stations and carriages are not fully accessible
Tips
Book reserved 1st/2nd class seats or the observation car in advance during high season — online or through a travel agent
Bring cash (small LKR notes/coins) for food at small stations — many vendors are cash-only
Carry water, sunscreen, a light rain jacket and insect repellent — weather can change quickly in the highlands
Charge your camera/phone and bring extra memory cards; battery charging on trains is not guaranteed
If you want photos of the Nine Arch Bridge, arrive early or late in the day to avoid crowds and harsh midday light
Respect local passengers — speaking softly and not blocking aisles is appreciated
Allow extra travel time — Sri Lankan trains are frequently delayed, so don’t book tight onward connections
