Malaysia
Travel Guide

Malaysia works well for first-time international travellers from India: direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kochi, widely available halal and vegetarian food, and English spoken almost everywhere. A typical 6 to 7 night package covers Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands and Langkawi, with Penang or Borneo added for longer trips.

Why Malaysia

Malaysia sits just across the Bay of Bengal, with flight times of about 4 hours 30 minutes from Chennai and roughly 5 hours 30 minutes from Delhi. The country splits into two halves: Peninsular Malaysia, where Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca and Langkawi are, and Malaysian Borneo, home to Sabah and Sarawak with their rainforest and diving. Indian travellers find the transition easy because Tamil is spoken in parts of KL and Penang, Indian restaurants are everywhere from Brickfields to Little India in Georgetown, and the Batu Caves temple complex is one of the country's best known landmarks.

Kuala Lumpur is the standard entry point. The Petronas Twin Towers observation deck, the KL Tower Skydeck, Merdeka Square and the Bukit Bintang shopping strip fill a comfortable two days. Batu Caves, with its 272 steps and the golden Murugan statue, is about 13 km north of the city and free to enter. Genting Highlands, an hour away by road at around 1,800 m, has the Awana SkyWay cable car, Chin Swee Caves Temple and cooler weather in the low 20s Celsius.

Top experiences

Langkawi is the beach component of most itineraries. The SkyCab cable car to Gunung Machinchang and the curved Sky Bridge give views across to Thailand on clear days. Island hopping tours to Pulau Dayang Bunda, mangrove cruises in Kilim Geoforest Park, and jet ski circuits around the archipelago are the usual bookings. Langkawi is duty free, so chocolate, liquor and cookware are noticeably cheap.

Penang suits food-focused travellers. Georgetown's UNESCO-listed core has clan jetties, street murals on Armenian Street, Kek Lok Si Temple and hawker centres at Gurney Drive where char kway teow and nasi kandar cost a few hundred rupees. Malacca adds Dutch colonial squares, Jonker Street night market and a river cruise, and can be done as a day trip from KL.

For wildlife, Borneo is the reason to extend. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre near Sandakan, river cruises on the Kinabatangan for proboscis monkeys, and diving at Sipadan or Mabul are serious draws. Mount Kinabalu at 4,095 m is a two-day climb requiring permits booked months ahead.

Who it suits

Families do well here because attractions are compact, transport is reliable and food is familiar. Sunway Lagoon and Aquaria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, plus Legoland in Johor, keep children occupied. Honeymooners tend to combine Langkawi with a Kuala Lumpur stay, and there are villa resorts at Datai Bay and Tanjung Rhu. Groups and budget travellers benefit from AirAsia routes and hostel or three-star hotel rates. Malaysia is also a common half of a twin-centre trip with Singapore or Thailand, since the Johor land border and short flights make combinations simple.

How to plan

The best months for the west coast, Langkawi and Penang are December to March, when rainfall is lower and daytime temperatures run 30 to 33 degrees Celsius. Borneo's east coast diving is best from March to September. April to October brings heavier afternoon showers on the peninsula, though rain rarely lasts all day. Book around Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Deepavali with extra lead time, as domestic travel peaks then.

Indian passport holders currently benefit from a visa exemption scheme for short tourist stays, but rules change, so confirm requirements and the digital arrival card before departure. Budget roughly 45,000 to 70,000 rupees per person for a 6 night KL and Langkawi package with flights and three-star hotels, and 90,000 upwards if you add Borneo or four-star stays. Carry ringgit or use cards, which are accepted widely. Grab is the standard app for local taxis, and KL's LRT and monorail are cheap for short hops.
