Overview

Penang pairs a proper beach base at Batu Ferringhi with the UNESCO-listed streets of George Town, which makes it a good pick for travellers who want sand without giving up food and sightseeing. You stay three nights on the northern coast, where the beach runs for about three kilometres with jet ski and parasailing operators, horse rides in the evening and a night market along the main road. Days cover the Penang Hill funicular, Kek Lok Si temple, the Sri Mahamariamman temple in Little India, the street art lanes of Armenian Street and Chulia Street, and Penang's hawker food, which includes plenty of vegetarian Indian options in Little India. Ideal from December to March. Flights connect to Penang from Chennai and Kuala Lumpur, so this suits a long weekend well.

Itinerary

Day1

Arrive Penang & Batu Ferringhi Beach Evening

Arrive at Penang International Airport and drive about an hour across the island to Batu Ferringhi on the north coast. Check in and head straight to the beach for the afternoon. The water here is calm enough for a swim and the shore is lined with operators offering jet ski and parasailing rides. After sunset, walk the Batu Ferringhi night market for souvenirs, sarongs and cheap electronics, and eat at one of the roadside seafood or Indian Muslim restaurants nearby.

Day2

George Town Heritage, Street Art & Kek Lok Si

After breakfast, drive to George Town for a guided walk through the UNESCO heritage core. See the Khoo Kongsi clan house, Armenian Street with Ernest Zacharevic's Kids on a Bicycle mural, Chulia Street, the Sri Mahamariamman temple in Little India and the Kapitan Keling Mosque. Break for laksa or vegetarian thali in Little India. In the afternoon, visit Kek Lok Si, the large hillside Buddhist temple complex with its Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas and the Kuan Yin statue at the upper level. Return to Batu Ferringhi by evening.

Day3

Penang Hill, Spice Garden & Beach Time

Ride the funicular train up Penang Hill to Bukit Bendera, where the temperature drops a few degrees and you get a wide view over the Penang Bridge and the Straits. Come down and stop at the Tropical Spice Garden on the coastal road near Teluk Bahang, a shaded walk through nutmeg, pepper and ginger plantings. Afternoon free on Batu Ferringhi beach for swimming, a beach massage or a hotel pool session. Optional evening trishaw ride or Gurney Drive hawker dinner at your own cost.

Day4

Departure from Penang

Morning at leisure on the beach or for last-minute shopping at Gurney Plaza or the Batu Ferringhi stalls. Check out and transfer to Penang International Airport for your flight. Travellers connecting through Kuala Lumpur can use the short domestic hop and still reach India the same night. Pick up Penang nutmeg products and dried spices as take-home gifts before leaving.
