Itinerary
Arrive Kuching & Sarawak River Evening
Arrive at Kuching International Airport and transfer to your hotel on the waterfront. After a rest, walk the Kuching Waterfront promenade, cross the Darul Hana Bridge for views of the Astana and the State Legislative Assembly, and browse Main Bazaar for Iban weaving and pua kumbu. In the evening take a Sarawak River cruise with commentary on Malay kampung houses along the banks. Dinner at a Padungan Road restaurant, where Sarawak laksa and kolo mee are the local staples and Indian options are available nearby.
Semenggoh Orangutans, Wind Cave & Fairy Cave
Leave early for Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, 24 km south of Kuching, for the 9 am feeding. Semi-wild orangutans, including large flanged males, come in from the reserve to the platforms, though sightings drop during the wild fruiting season. Continue to Bau district for the Wind Cave Nature Reserve, where boardwalks pass through chambers occupied by bats and swiftlets, and the towering Fairy Cave with its limestone formations. Return to Kuching in the late afternoon and spend the evening at Carpenter Street's Chinese temples and street food stalls.
Boat to Bako National Park & Night Walk
Drive 40 minutes to Bako Bazaar and board a small boat to Telok Assam beach, watching for proboscis monkeys in the mangroves on approach. Check in to a park chalet and hike the Telok Paku or Telok Pandan Kecil trail through kerangas heath forest to sandstone cliffs and pitcher plants. Proboscis monkeys, silvered langurs, bearded pigs and monitor lizards are commonly seen near the headquarters. After dinner at the park canteen, join a guided night walk to look for flying lemurs, tarsiers, tree frogs and Wagler's pit vipers.
Bako Morning Trails, Return to Kuching
Wake early for the quietest wildlife hours on the Lintang loop trail, where bearded pigs forage near the beach and macaques move through the canopy. After breakfast take the boat back to Bako Bazaar, timed with the tide, and return to Kuching. Afternoon at the Sarawak Cultural Village at the foot of Mount Santubong, with reconstructed Iban longhouses, Bidayuh roundhouses and a Melanau tall house, followed by a cultural performance. Return to your Kuching hotel for the evening.
Matang Wildlife Centre & Kubah National Park
Drive 35 km to Matang Wildlife Centre, part of Kubah National Park, where rescued orangutans, sun bears, sambar deer, crocodiles and hornbills are housed in large enclosures within the rainforest. Walk a short jungle trail towards the waterfall. Continue into Kubah National Park, known for its palm diversity and the Frog Pond trail, one of the best places in Sarawak to see and hear multiple frog species. Return to Kuching by evening, with time for a foot reflexology session and shopping at Plaza Merdeka.
Kuching Departure
After breakfast, visit the Borneo Cultures Museum for its natural history and Sarawak's ethnographic collections, or pick up layered kek lapis Sarawak cakes and Sarawak black pepper as gifts. Transfer to Kuching International Airport for the onward flight. Travellers extending can add a flight to Mulu for the caves and the evening bat exodus at Deer Cave.
