DEC–MAR (Peak Season)
Weather & Temperature
Daytime 30–33°C with nights around 23–26°C across Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. The west coast is at its driest and sunniest, with short afternoon showers rather than day-long rain. The east coast and islands like Perhentian and Redang sit under the northeast monsoon until about March, so seas there are rough and many resorts stay shut.
What to Expect
This is the busiest window, overlapping with Indian winter holidays, Christmas–New Year and Chinese New Year travel. Hotel rates in KL, Langkawi and Genting Highlands rise sharply and Langkawi villas plus school-holiday flights sell out weeks ahead. Attractions such as Batu Caves, Petronas Twin Towers and Legoland see long queues on weekends.
Key Events & Festivals
- Thaipusam at Batu Caves (Jan/Feb) — one of the largest Tamil observances outside India
- Chinese New Year celebrations in Penang, KL's Chinatown and Ipoh (Jan/Feb)
- Federal Territory Day in Kuala Lumpur (1 February)
- Chap Goh Meh, the fifteenth night of Chinese New Year, in Penang
Recommended Activities
- Island-hopping, mangrove tours and the Langkawi Sky Bridge on the west coast
- Penang heritage walks in George Town with Little India and Chulia Street food trails
- Cameron Highlands tea estates and strawberry farms in cool, clear weather
- Snorkelling and diving around Pulau Payar and Pulau Tioman's calmer west side
Travel Tips
- Book flights and Langkawi or Genting hotels 6–8 weeks ahead for the December–January rush
- Avoid planning Perhentian or Redang beach stays before April; shift to Langkawi or Penang instead
- Carry light cottons plus one warm layer for Cameron Highlands and Genting nights, where temperatures dip to 15–18°C
- Keep Chinese New Year dates in mind, as some family-run restaurants and shops close for two to three days
