Penang George Town Heritage and Street Art Walk

George Town's core is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking it is the main reason travellers add Penang to a Malaysia itinerary. The route usually starts at the clan jetties or Fort Cornwallis and takes in the Blue Mansion of Cheong Fatt Tze, the Khoo Kongsi clan house with its carved granite and gilded hall, Kapitan Keling Mosque, and the Street of Harmony where a mosque, Chinese temple, Hindu temple and Anglican church stand within a few hundred metres.

Ernest Zacharevic's murals from 2012, including Kids on Bicycle on Lebuh Armenian and Boy on Motorbike, remain the most photographed spots, supported by dozens of steel-rod caricature sculptures explaining local trades.

Food is inseparable from the walk. Little India on Lebuh Pasar and Lebuh Queen serves banana leaf meals, and Penang's own char kway teow, asam laksa and cendol are sold from hawker stalls at Lebuh Chulia and Gurney Drive. Mornings before 11 am are best, as the streets get very hot by midday. Many visitors hire a trishaw for part of the route or join a guided bicycle tour.
