Batu Caves Temple Climb

Batu Caves is the most visited Hindu site outside India in Southeast Asia and an obvious stop for Indian travellers in Kuala Lumpur. The 42.7-metre gold statue of Lord Murugan stands at the base of a limestone hill, and 272 painted rainbow steps lead up to Temple Cave, a vast cavern with shrines at the far end where daylight falls through an opening in the roof.

Entry to the main cave and temple is free. Side attractions are ticketed, including the Ramayana Cave with its illuminated dioramas of the epic and a large Hanuman statue outside, and the Dark Cave conservation site when open. Macaques are everywhere on the staircase and will snatch food, water bottles and phones.

Thaipusam, usually in late January or February, transforms the site: lakhs of devotees arrive, many carrying kavadi, and a silver chariot procession travels from the Sri Mahamariamman Temple in the city. If you want the festival experience, plan hotels months in advance. Otherwise, arrive by 8 am when the steps are cool and the crowds thin. Batu Caves is on the KTM Komuter line from KL Sentral, a roughly 30-minute ride, making it one of the easiest half-day trips in the city.
