Malacca Heritage Day Trip from Kuala Lumpur
Malacca, a UNESCO World Heritage city about two hours south of Kuala Lumpur by road, layers Portuguese, Dutch, British and Chinese Peranakan history into a walkable few square kilometres. It is the most common day trip out of KL for Indian groups.
The core is Dutch Square, painted terracotta red, with Christ Church built in 1753 and the Stadthuys, believed to be the oldest surviving Dutch building in Southeast Asia. A short climb up St Paul's Hill leads to the ruins of St Paul's Church and the surviving A Famosa gate, Porta de Santiago, built by the Portuguese in 1511. Jonker Street below is the shopping and food spine, best on Friday to Sunday evenings when it becomes a night market.
Most tours include a Malacca River cruise, a 45-minute boat ride past murals, old godowns and riverside cafes, and a ride in one of the loudly decorated trishaws fitted with speakers and fairy lights. Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple on Harmony Street, built in 1781 and one of the oldest Hindu temples in Malaysia, sits within walking distance of a mosque and a Chinese temple on the same road.
Chicken rice balls, cendol and Nyonya food are the local specialities; vegetarian options exist along Jonker Street.
