Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary and Deerland Visit
The Kuala Gandah National Elephant Conservation Centre in Pahang, about two and a half hours from Kuala Lumpur, is a government-run relocation centre that rescues wild Asian elephants displaced by plantations and moves them to protected forest. Visits are structured around the sanctuary's conservation programme rather than rides, and elephant riding and bathing have been discontinued in favour of viewing and supervised feeding.
The visit begins with a short documentary in the visitor gallery explaining how the translocation unit works. Rangers then bring out the resident elephants for a feeding session, where visitors hand over sugarcane, bananas and palm fronds under supervision. There is a bathing pond area where the mahouts demonstrate care routines, and viewing decks along the enclosure.
Most tours pair Kuala Gandah with the nearby Deerland Park, a small private facility where you can feed sika deer, and with a stop at the Lata Kekabu waterfall or a Batu Caves visit on the return leg. The road passes through oil palm and rubber estates, which gives a sense of rural Pahang that KL day trips miss.
Entry to the elephant centre itself is by donation, and slots are limited, so tour operators book ahead. Sessions run in the afternoon on most days, with the centre closed on certain public holidays.
