Ascend the metal stairways between the lion's paws — a dramatic and narrow section. Expect queues during peak season.

Descend carefully; visit the museum near the entrance for archaeological context and exhibits if time permits.

Safety Requirements

  • Moderate fitness required: steps and steep sections; not suitable for people with severe mobility issues

  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear with good grip

  • Carry sufficient water and sun protection (hat, sunscreen); shade is limited on the climb

  • Avoid climbing during heavy rain — metal stairs and rock surfaces become slippery

  • Be cautious of narrow stairways and follow staff directions; supervise children closely

  • If you suffer from severe vertigo or fear of heights, consider staying in the lower areas

Tips

  • Start early (before 9:00) to avoid heat and crowds; late afternoons are cooler but check closing times

  • Bring at least 1–2 liters of water, sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent

  • Wear comfortable clothing and good walking shoes; long skirts/shorts are acceptable but modest dress is appreciated

  • Hire a licensed guide at the entrance or pre-book one to gain historical context and spot details you might miss

  • Allow 2–3 hours for a relaxed visit including the museum and gardens

  • Check the official site or local tourism office for up-to-date ticket prices and opening hours

  • Combine Sigiriya with nearby attractions in the Cultural Triangle such as Polonnaruwa, Dambulla Cave Temple and Minneriya National Park
