South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA),Maldives
South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) is one of the Maldives' most important marine conservation zones, designated to protect extensive coral reefs, seagrass beds and a high density of large pelagic species—most notably the whale shark (Rhincodon typus). The area supports significant biodiversity, provides nursery and feeding grounds for turtles and reef fishes, sustains local fisheries, and underpins tourism-based livelihoods (diving/snorkeling). SAMPA contributes to national efforts in marine conservation and sustainable tourism, and acts as an important site for scientific research and long-term monitoring.

Best Time to Visit
Year-round for marine life, with peak whale-shark sighting frequency commonly reported in the dry season (December–April); however encounters are possible outside this window.
Weather Conditions
Tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry Northeast monsoon (Dec–Apr) and the wetter Southwest monsoon (May–Nov). Temperatures generally range from mid-20s to low-30s °C (high humidity). Short rain showers are common in the wet season.
Accessibility
Nearest international gateway: Velana International Airport (Malé). Access to South Ari Atoll is commonly by domestic flight or speedboat/ferry from Malé. Maamigili (an inhabited island in South Ari Atoll) has a domestic airport with regular connections to Malé, reducing onward travel time. Many resorts operate direct transfer services—check schedules and transfer types when booking.
Recommended Duration
Plan for 3–7 days to allow for multiple dives/snorkel trips and to increase chances of whale-shark encounters and exploring varied sites.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Light, breathable clothing; reef-safe sunscreen (biodegradable, mineral-based); swimwear; rash guard or wetsuit for sun protection and warmth during dives; snorkel/dive gear (rental widely available); waterproof camera or housing; lightweight rain jacket during wet season.
Local Food & Souvenirs
Taste Maldivian specialties such as mas huni (tuna with coconut), grilled fish and curries at local eateries or resort restaurants. Respectfully purchase souvenirs made by local artisans—handicrafts, lacquerware and textiles—rather than collecting natural items from reefs or beaches. Avoid buying coral, shells or products derived from threatened species.
