Safety Requirements
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS card required—carry these at all times
Basic altitude awareness: Poon Hill reaches ~3,000–3,200 m—monitor for acute mountain sickness symptoms
Good hiking boots and trekking poles recommended for stone steps and rooty trails
Layered clothing for cold pre-dawn temperatures and sun protection during the day
Travel insurance that covers trekking up to 4,000 m (recommended)
Carry sufficient water, water purification or purification tablets, and high-energy snacks
Tips
Start the Poon Hill hike very early (03:30–05:00) to reach the viewpoint before sunrise—carry a headlamp
Book teahouses or guides in high season (Mar–May, Sep–Nov) in advance if possible
Hire a guide or porter if you want cultural insight or lighter loads—guides also help with permits and route decisions
Carry cash in small Nepalese rupee notes—ATMs are available in Pokhara but rare on the trail
Bring rain gear in shoulder seasons and sturdy footwear for long stone stair sections
Respect local villages: ask before photographing people and follow teahouse rules (shoes off, quiet hours)
Binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens are highly recommended for sunrise photography
