Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek is a quieter, off-the-beaten-path trek in the Annapurna region offering close-up views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the sacred Machapuchare (Fishtail). The trail passes through lush rhododendron and oak forests, small Gurung and Magar villages, and alpine meadows before reaching the high camps and the panoramic Mardi Himal Base Camp/Viewpoint. Compared with popular Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill routes, Mardi Himal provides a more secluded experience with spectacular sunrise and sunset mountain vistas.

Location

Mardi Himal Trek (Mardi Himal Base Camp / Viewpoint), Kaski (Pokhara), Nepal

Duration

Typically 4–6 days (standard 5-day itinerary commonly used). Shorter 3-day options and longer 7–10 day flexible itineraries are possible.

Best Time to Visit

Best seasons: Autumn (late September–November) and Spring (March–May) for clear skies, stable weather, and rhododendron blooms. Winters (Dec–Feb) are cold with possible snow; monsoon (June–mid Sept) brings heavy rain, slippery trails, and limited views.

Highlights

  • Close-up panoramic views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machapuchare (Fishtail)

  • Less-crowded, off-the-beaten-path trail with peaceful alpine scenery

  • Colorful rhododendron and oak forests (best in spring)

  • Stunning sunrise and sunset viewpoints from High Camp/Mardi Base

  • Cultural interaction with Gurung and Magar villages en route

  • Tea-house accommodations and the chance to experience rural Nepali mountain life

Itinerary

  1. Drive/transfer from Pokhara to Kande (approx. 1–1.5 hrs), trek to Australian Camp (or Pothana).

Trail begins near Kande; warm-up trek through forests and switchbacks to viewpoints overlooking Annapurna range. Overnight in tea-house (Australian Camp or Pothana). Elevation gain gradual.

  2. Trek from Australian Camp/Pothana to Low Camp / Forest Camp (or to Landruk depending on route).

Trail descends/ascends through rhododendron and oak forests; options to visit Landruk/Ghandruk detours. Tea-house accommodation; moderate trekking day.

  3. Trek from Low Camp to High Camp (Mardi High Camp).

Steeper and more rugged trail through alpine vegetation. Final sections may be narrow with loose soils; prepare for cold nights and high altitude. Aim to arrive before dusk for views.

  4. Early morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp or viewpoint for sunrise; return to Siding/Landruk and descend to Lumle or Pokhara (via jeep/vehicle).

Early start for best mountain vistas; descent longer but mostly downhill. Many groups split the descent over two days if following a relaxed pace.

  5. Extra day for acclimatization, side trips (Ghandruk village), or return to Pokhara at leisure.

Useful buffer day for bad weather or slower groups. Explore nearby cultural sites or relax in Pokhara’s lakeside area.

Safety Requirements

  • Permits required: ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) and TIMS card (Trekkers Information Management System) — often arranged by agencies

  • Altitude awareness: highest sleeping altitude typically ~3,700–4,500 m depending on itinerary; watch for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) — ascend slowly, hydrate, and acclimatize

  • Fitness: moderate fitness and prior hiking experience recommended—some steep and rugged sections

  • Guide/porter recommended for navigation support, safety, and local knowledge (especially outside peak seasons)

  • Carry a basic first-aid kit, altitude medication (consult physician), warm clothing for night-time, and emergency communication plan

Tips

  • Pack layered clothing, warm down jacket, waterproof shell, hat and gloves for cold mornings/evenings

  • Good trekking boots, gaiters, trekking poles and blister prevention supplies are recommended

  • Bring cash (Nepalese Rupee) for teahouse bills, tips and permits — ATMs limited outside Pokhara

  • Drink boiled/water-purified water or use water purification tablets/filters; expect to pay for bottled water at higher camps

  • Book peak-season slots early (Oct–Nov and Mar–Apr) to secure guides and teahouse rooms

  • Consider travel insurance with high-altitude coverage and helicopter evacuation option

  • Respect local culture and environment: avoid single-use plastics, follow trail etiquette, and support local communities by using teahouses and hiring local staff

  • If short on time, ask agencies for 3–4 day express options but be mindful of faster altitude gain and reduced acclimatization
