Best Time to Visit
Best time: Pre-monsoon (March–May) and post-monsoon/Autumn (late September–November). These windows offer clearer skies, stable weather, and better views of the high peaks.
Weather Conditions
Strong seasonal variation: warm and green in lower valleys in spring; monsoon (June–August) brings heavy rain and cloud cover, making views unreliable; autumn (Sept–Nov) is clear and dry; winters are cold with heavy snow above ~3,000 m. Temperatures vary by altitude from mild in Namche (daytime) to well below freezing at night above base camp. Weather changes rapidly; expect high UV, cold nights, and strong winds at altitude.
Accessibility
Typical access: Fly from Kathmandu (Tribhuvan Airport) to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport) — a short, weather-dependent flight. Alternative: longer overland trek from Jiri/Phaplu. From Lukla the region is accessed on foot; there are no roads to Everest Base Camp. Nearest international gateway: Kathmandu.
Recommended Duration
For Everest Base Camp round-trip with proper acclimatization: typically 12–14 days from Lukla (about 10–14 days from Kathmandu including flights). Gokyo or Three Passes circuits require 14–21+ days. Reserve extra days for weather delays, especially Lukla flights.
Clothing & Gear Tips
Layered clothing system (base layer, insulating mid-layer, waterproof shell), warm down jacket, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, thermal underwear, sun hat and warm hat, gloves, sunglasses with high UV protection, SPF sunscreen, sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C (lower preferred for high altitudes), trekking poles, water purification (tablets/filters), basic first aid kit, personal medications, altitude medication (consult a doctor about acetazolamide/Diamox).
Local Food & Souvenirs
Local foods: Sherpa tea/butter tea, dal bhat (lentils and rice), momos (dumplings), thukpa (noodle soup), yak cheese and yogurt. Souvenirs: prayer flags, Thangka paintings, yak wool products, pashmina/shawls, handcrafted jewelry, and local wood/metal crafts. Respect local customs when buying religious items.
