Tsho Rolpa Lake,Nepal

Tsho Rolpa (also called Tsho Rolpa Lake or Trakarding Tsho) is a large glacial lake in the Rolwaling Valley of Dolakha District in eastern Nepal. Sitting at about 4,580 m (15,026 ft) in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, the lake is important for its glaciological and hydrological value as a reservoir of meltwater from the surrounding glaciers and as a source for the Rolwaling Khola (a tributary of the Sunkoshi River). It drew international attention in the 1990s and 2000s because of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk, prompting engineering interventions and monitoring projects. The area is also culturally significant to local Sherpa, Tamang and other communities and lies within an important conservation landscape that supports high-altitude flora and fauna.

Places to visit

  • Tsho Rolpa Lake (glacial lake with striking turquoise colour)
  • Moraine-dammed lake formation and glacial landscape
  • Panoramic views of the Gaurishankar massif and surrounding Himalaya
  • Traditional high‑altitude villages and Buddhist monasteries in the Rolwaling Valley
  • Trekking routes and high passes in the Rolwaling region

Unique Aspects

  • Intense turquoise colour caused by rock flour (suspended glacial silt)
  • Large moraine dam that historically raised concerns about GLOF
  • One of Nepal’s largest glacial lakes by volume and surface area
  • Alpine terrain with seasonal wildflowers, dwarf rhododendron and high‑altitude fauna
  • Remote, less-crowded trekking experience compared with popular trails like Everest or Annapurna

Things to do

  • Multi-day trekking to Tsho Rolpa through the Rolwaling Valley
  • Camping and high‑altitude photography of glaciers, lake and mountain panoramas
  • Cultural visits to Sherpa/Tamang villages and local monasteries
  • Wildlife and birdwatching (spotting species adapted to alpine environments)
  • Guided glacier and moraine observation with local guides

Best Time to Visit

Best time: Spring (March–May) and Autumn (September–November) — stable weather, clearer skies and optimal trekking conditions.

Weather Conditions

Alpine climate: cold, with large diurnal temperature swings. Daytime temperatures in trekking season can be cool to mild; nights are cold and often below freezing at lake altitude. Snow and storms are possible outside the main seasons; winter brings heavy snow and much harsher conditions.

Accessibility

Nearest international airport: Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (KTM). Road access to trailheads is possible via Dolakha/Charikot or Jagat depending on route; expect a multi‑day trek from the nearest motorable road to reach the lake (commonly 6–10 days round trip depending on itinerary and acclimatization). High altitude and remote terrain mean experienced guides, porters and good logistics are strongly recommended. Mobile connectivity is limited; emergency evacuation requires planning.

Recommended Duration

6–10 days round trip from the nearest roadhead (itineraries vary — allow extra days for acclimatization and weather delays).

Clothing & Gear Tips

Layered clothing (base, insulating and waterproof outer layers), warm down jacket, thermal underwear, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, gaiters, warm hat and gloves, sunglasses and high‑SPF sunscreen, sleeping bag rated for cold alpine nights, trekking poles, water purification method, basic first‑aid kit, and medication for altitude sickness (e.g., acetazolamide) if prescribed by a doctor.

Local Food & Souvenirs

Typical high‑altitude Nepalese foods: dal‑bhat, lentil soups, noodles, momos and butter tea. Local villages sell yak and sheep wool products, handwoven shawls, scarves, and prayer flags; small handicrafts and religious items make popular souvenirs.
