Safety Requirements
Carry a valid identity proof; check and obtain any local permits required by the forest department
Hire a local guide if unfamiliar with the area — trails can be confusing in fog or after heavy rain
Acclimatize in Ravangla (1,900–2,200 m) before attempting the trek to Maenam Top (~3,000–3,200 m) to reduce altitude sickness risk
Wear proper trekking shoes with good grip; use trekking poles if preferred
Carry layered clothing — weather can change rapidly; include waterproof jacket and warm layers
Carry first-aid basics, sunscreen, and enough water (1.5–2 L per person recommended for a day trek)
Follow wildlife safety rules: do not feed or approach animals, keep noise to a minimum, and store food securely
Tips
Start early to catch sunrise and avoid afternoon cloud buildup.
Best for birdwatchers: bring binoculars and a field guide; early morning gives the best bird activity.
Respect the sanctuary: carry out all waste and use reusable water bottles to reduce plastic.
Clothing: wear moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof/waterproof outer layer.
Permits & guide: check with the Ravangla forest office or your lodge for current permit procedures; hiring a local guide supports the community and increases safety.
Photography: carry extra batteries and protective covers — cold drains batteries faster at high altitude.
Accommodations: Ravangla has basic lodges and homestays; book in advance during peak season (April–May and Oct–Nov).
