Old Silk Route drive via Zuluk hairpins
Old Silk Route is a historic trade road that once connected India to Tibet. The drive via the Zuluk hairpins follows a dramatic ridge road in East Sikkim, offering spectacular views of the Himalaya (including Kanchenjunga on clear days), high-altitude meadows, remnant caravan paths and a sequence of steep hairpin bends that make the route both scenic and adventurous. This is an accessible alpine drive combining heritage, photography and short hikes around vantage points.
Location
Zuluk (Dzuluk), Old Silk Route, East Sikkim (nearest major hub: Gangtok), India
Duration
Half-day to full-day drive (6–10 hours) for a round trip from Gangtok; 1–2 days recommended if staying overnight in Zuluk or nearby homestays.
Best Time to Visit
October to April for crisp, clear mountain views and possible snow. March–May offers rhododendron blooms; avoid June–September (monsoon) because of frequent landslides, poor visibility and slippery roads.
Pricing
Approx. INR 3,500–8,000 per private vehicle (Gangtok return; depends on vehicle type and season). Shared local jeeps / taxis typically cost INR 800–2,500 per person one-way/return. Homestays in Zuluk range INR 800–2,000 per person per night. Permit fees (if applicable) and food are extra.

Itinerary
Depart Gangtok (or other base) early in the morning
Early departure maximizes clear mountain views and avoids afternoon cloud cover. Carry warm layers and breakfast/snacks.
Drive through Rongli / Rorathang and begin the ascent to Zuluk
Road narrows and becomes winding; expect several police checks/permit verification points. Stop for short breaks and photography.
Thambi (Thambi View Point) — viewpoint stop
Best spot for sunrise views (if timed) and panoramic photos of the snow-capped ranges. Short walks possible around the viewpoint.
Zuluk ridge loop and hairpin vantage points
Drive along the ridge, stopping at iconic hairpin viewpoints, local stalls and small chapels. Take care on narrow sections.
Lunch / homestay or packed lunch at Zuluk
Limited simple eateries; homestay meals are recommended for fresh local food.
Optional side trip to Kupup Lake and Nathang Valley
Short drives/hikes to high-altitude lakes and pastures. Weather-dependent; watch for altitude and exposure.
Return drive to Gangtok (or stay overnight in Zuluk)
Begin return in good daylight; if staying overnight, book a local homestay in advance to experience local life.
Safety Requirements
Acclimatize for a day in Gangtok or lower altitude to reduce risk of acute mountain sickness (Zuluk ~3,500 m / 11,500 ft approx.)
Carry a valid ID and check with local authorities about permits (police/inner line/protected area permits may be required for certain stretches).
Use an experienced local driver; 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle recommended on rough stretches.
Avoid travel during heavy rain/monsoon due to landslide risk and during heavy snowfall unless properly equipped.
Keep a first-aid kit, extra warm clothing, high-energy snacks, water, and a charged phone / power bank.
Drive slowly on hairpins, keep to the correct side, and watch for blind corners, overhanging rocks and livestock.
Tips
Start early for the best light and clearer skies; afternoons can get cloudy.
Carry cash (local stalls and homestays may not accept cards) and small change for permits and tea stalls.
Book vehicles and homestays in advance during peak season (Oct–Mar).
Respect local culture and private property; ask before photographing people and homesteads.
Bring layered clothing, sun protection (sunglasses, SPF) and a small tripod for sunrise/sunset shots.
If you feel headache, nausea, dizziness—descend immediately and seek medical help; avoid alcohol at altitude.
Check weather and road conditions with your hotel or local tour operator the day before departure.
