Best time: March to June and September to November. Summer (spring-through-early summer) offers rhododendron blooms and clearer skies; autumn brings crisp weather and good visibility. Winters are extremely cold with heavy snow; many roads may be closed.

Alpine climate: cold year-round at high altitudes. Daytime can be pleasant in peak season, nights are cold. Expect sudden weather changes, possible snow or rain, and thin air at altitude.

Lachen is accessible by road from Gangtok (long mountain drive). Nearest major transport hubs: Bagdogra Airport (Silchar region) / New Jalpaiguri (Siliguri) railway station, then road transfer to Gangtok and onwards to Lachen. Roads are mountainous and can be rough—travel times are long and depend on weather. Seasonal closures can occur. Advance bookings for permits and local transport are recommended.

Recommended stay: 2–3 days in Lachen to acclimatize, visit nearby valleys, and make a day trip to Gurudongmar. Combine with nearby Lachung and North Sikkim itinerary for 4–6 days.

Pack: warm layered clothing (thermal base layers, fleece, insulated jacket), waterproof outerwear, sturdy trekking shoes, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen (UV is stronger at altitude), warm gloves and hat, basic altitude sickness medication and a personal first-aid kit.

Local foods: thukpa, momos, butter tea, yak-based products in season. Souvenirs: handwoven woolens, yak wool items, traditional handicrafts and local preserves or honey. Respect local customs when buying or photographing people.
